Former Ohio State Defensive Back Pleads Guilty to Bank Robberies
In a surprising turn of events, former Ohio State defensive back Marcus Williamson has pleaded guilty to a series of bank robberies committed in 2024. The 27-year-old from Westerville faced the music in Franklin County Common Pleas Court, admitting to nine counts of robbery. His sentencing is slated for June 25.
Originally, Williamson was charged with 17 counts of robbery and eight counts of theft. The charges stem from a spree in March and April 2024, during which police say he stole approximately $22,000.
One notable incident occurred on April 24, 2024, at First Merchant’s Bank in Columbus. Williamson reportedly handed a teller a note claiming he was armed and demanding cash.
After leaving the bank, he was seen getting into a vehicle and was apprehended shortly thereafter. Police discovered money from the bank in his possession.
Williamson, a Westerville high school standout, played for Ohio State from 2017 to 2021. During his college career, he started 14 games but didn’t record any interceptions. Known for his academic prowess, he earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2021 and pursued a graduate degree in public management after completing a history degree in 2020.
This case highlights a dramatic shift from Williamson's days on the field to his current legal challenges, leaving many in the sports community reflecting on the complexities athletes can face off the field.
