Julian Sayin Just Got Hit With A Wild New Ohio State Doubt

Amid rising criticism from anonymous sources, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin is set to use this unfounded doubt as fuel for the upcoming season.

A strange new question has been hanging over Julian Sayin this summer, and it has nothing to do with his arm.

According to Josh Pate, anonymous players and coaches have passed along the idea that the Ohio State quarterback does not play with enough heart. Pate said he was relaying what he had heard from multiple people in college football, even while making clear he was not personally accusing Sayin of that himself.

“I wonder against Indiana, or maybe it's a Playoff game, I wonder if there's a leveling up, that's all,” Pate said. “I don't question his heart at all.

That wasn't the message that I was delivering there. What I was doing was echoing sentiment that I 1,000 percent have gotten from several people in college football.

Players and coaches, because they do question his heart. I've heard that enough times to where I wrap it up in a ball, and I'll throw it out there.”

That notion is hard to square with what Sayin just did in his first season as Ohio State’s starter. The former 5-star prospect and lone returning Heisman finalist from last year threw for 3,610 yards, 32 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. He stepped in after Will Howard had led the Buckeyes to the natty, and while Sayin wasn’t flawless, he was clearly one of the top quarterbacks in the country.

The criticism, at least on the surface, sounds more like a reaction to demeanor than production. Sayin’s calm, positive approach apparently rubbed some people the wrong way, but that’s a strange standard for a quarterback. Being composed when things go sideways is usually a strength, not a flaw.

The timing of all this also makes the chatter feel even more out of place. Ohio State lost the conference title game to Indiana and then fell to Miami in the College Football Playoff, but Sayin was not the reason for either loss. Still, he is the kind of player people will try to pin things on when a team like Ohio State comes up short.

Pate also suggested the noise could end up working in Sayin’s favor. In his view, the quarterback may use the criticism as fuel next season and answer it on the field.

That’s the part Ohio State fans will probably care about most. If Sayin really is hearing this kind of talk, the Buckeyes are betting he turns it into something sharper in 2026.

Ohio State's 5-Star Miss May Set Up An Even Bigger Win

Monshun Sales choosing Indiana was a clear recruiting miss for Ohio State, but it may also have sharpened the Buckeyes next move. With the five-star defensive target off the board, attention has shifted to running back David Gabriel Georges, one of the top backs in the country and a prospect Ohio State has been pressing hard as the class takes shape.

Gabriel Georges is also being pursued by Tennessee, which makes the race more than a routine follow-up after one setback. Still, Ohio State appears to be in a strong position and could even adjust its NIL approach now that the Sales pursuit is over, a sign the Buckeyes are treating this as a chance to turn one loss into a bigger gain. John Mobley Jr. Is Suddenly At The Center Of Ohio State's Biggest Need

John Mobley Jr. is starting to look like more than just a rising junior for Ohio State. With Bruce Thornton gone, the Buckeyes have a leadership gap to fill heading into the 2026-27 season, and Mobley has begun stepping into that space during summer workouts. Chris Diebler has noticed the shift in practice, where Mobleys energy and voice have stood out as the team works through drills and starts building a new identity.

For a roster that needs someone to organize, direct and steady things on the floor, Mobleys role is becoming a central part of the conversation. He has been active with teammates throughout practice, setting the tone and taking on responsibilities that usually come later for a player his age. The question now is how far that growth goes once the Buckeyes move from summer sessions into a season that will ask even more of him. [Read more 🡒]

Karlos May Just Gave Ohio State Fans More To Watch Closely

Karlos Mays commitment gave Ohio State another notable win on the recruiting trail, and it came with the kind of message the Buckeyes like to hear from a defensive lineman. The four-star prospect picked Ohio State over Auburn, Florida State and Georgia, pointing to the programs development track and his belief that the staff can prepare him for the next level.

There is still another recruiting watch item looming for Buckeyes fans, though, and it arrives soon. Five-star running back David Gabriel Georges is scheduled to make his college decision on July 22, with Ohio State still in the mix as one of his top options, so Mays pledge may not be the last reason to keep an eye on this class.
