Julian Sayin Just Gave Buckeye Fans Another Reason To Feel Disrespected

Despite Julian Sayin's achievements with Ohio State's offense, CBS Sports' quarterback rankings have stirred controversy by placing them fifth nationally.

Ohio State has plenty of reason to feel good about what Julian Sayin can do in 2026, but one national ranking didn’t exactly treat the Buckeyes’ quarterback situation with much respect.

CBS Sports writer Blake Brockermeyer put together his top 10 quarterback rooms for the 2026 season and slotted Ohio State at No. 5. Ahead of the Buckeyes were Oregon, Texas, Utah and Ole Miss.

That placement is drawing plenty of attention because of what Ohio State is bringing back. Sayin and Jeremiah Smith are both set to return, giving the Buckeyes what should be one of the most dangerous offenses in the country. Smith is viewed as the best receiver in the nation and maybe the best player overall, while Sayin will be the one delivering him the football for a second straight year.

Sayin already has a strong résumé. Last season, he was a Heisman Finalist, even if he came up short of winning the award. The expectation around Ohio State is that he should be even better in his second season as the starter.

Brockermeyer’s list, though, pushes Ohio State behind a few situations that don’t look nearly as settled. Oregon makes sense at No. 1 with Dante Moore returning. Moore is expected to be one of the Heisman favorites this year, and he could have been a top-five pick in April’s NFL Draft had he declared.

Texas is another head-scratcher, with Arch Manning getting more hype than he has earned so far. Ohio State shut him down last season, holding Texas to just seven points, and the Buckeyes will try to do it again in Week 2.

Utah’s spot is even harder to justify because the Utes still don’t have a defined starter. Brockermeyer leaned on the idea that the room has two viable options, which apparently was enough to boost them that high.

Ole Miss gets the final spot ahead of Ohio State, with Trinidad Chambliss ranked above Sayin. That one stands out too, even if Chambliss is a solid player and the numbers would suggest Sayin has been better.

Brockermeyer also put Duece Knight ahead of Tavien St. Clair, though the point made there was that Knight may have more experience while St.

Clair has the higher ceiling in raw talent.

For Ohio State, the bigger picture is still the same: Sayin has a real chance to lead the Buckeyes to a national championship. That path depends on his growth and on better play from an offensive line that was the team’s weakest unit last season, especially late in the year.

There’s also another layer to Sayin’s season. He can take a step forward by using his legs more often. He didn’t scramble much last year, even though fans wanted to see it, but that has been a point of emphasis for him during the offseason.

And if everything comes together, Sayin could do something Ohio State fans have been waiting for: end the program’s Heisman drought. This could also be his final season in Columbus, since he is expected to be a first-round pick in next year’s draft. A few of the quarterbacks ranked ahead of him can’t say that.

Ohio State May Finally Be Closing In On Its Needed Interior Force

Ohio States push to add more interior heft on defense has moved into a critical stretch, with the Buckeyes now in the mix for one of the top remaining linemen on their board. The recruitment has tightened around a July 18 decision date, and Ohio State is still squarely in the conversation alongside Georgia and Auburn after making a strong impression during his official visit to Columbus.

The latest read is that the Buckeyes have real momentum, which matters given how much they still need a true interior presence in this class. There is still work to do before the commitment comes down, and Georgia remains a factor after leaving a favorable impression of its own, but Ohio State appears to have positioned itself well enough to feel optimistic heading into the final days. Five-Star EDGE Battle Is Starting To Feel Uncomfortably Familiar

David D.J. Jacobs, Jr. has already given Ohio State a verbal commitment, but the recruitment around the top-ranked defensive end has not settled the way the Buckeyes would like. The 2027 edge rusher remains one of the most coveted prospects in the country, and even with his pledge on the books, other programs are still pressing hard as the process drags on.

Miami is making a real push to flip him, while Georgia is also lurking as a serious factor in the background. For Ohio State, the concern is familiar: landing an elite pass rusher is only part of the battle, and until Jacobs shuts things down, the Buckeyes have to keep treating this one like it is very much alive.
