John Mobley Jr. didn’t just show up at Ohio State basketball practice on Thursday morning - he set the tone for it.
Inside the practice gym at the Schottenstein Center, the noise never really let up. Drills were moving, players were competing, and there was plenty of chatter. But one voice kept cutting through everything else: Mobley’s.
The rising junior is stepping into a far larger job for Ohio State this season. He’s not only expected to be the Buckeyes’ top option, he’s also being asked to become the team’s leader heading into 2026-27.
That’s no small assignment. Bruce Thornton held that responsibility for the last four years, and the all-time leading scorer at Ohio State also became the program’s first four-time captain.
Replacing that kind of presence is a heavy lift. Mobley, though, appears to be embracing it.
“Juni's leadership has been one of the best parts about our summer,” Diebler said Thursday morning. “Obviously losing Bruce was a void for us in the leadership front, and Juni has stepped in and really taken that to a whole other level.”
Leadership was one of the biggest offseason talking points around Mobley, and according to Diebler, he’s settled into the role faster than expected.
“He and I talked about how important that was going to be,” Diebler added. “I knew he could do it, but he's been ahead of schedule as far as leadership goes for us, and that's important for this team. He's certainly not the only one, but I've been specifically impressed with his leadership.”
That showed up in a big way during practice. Mobley was vocal with freshman Vuk Lazarevic after Lazarevic didn’t step out to contest a three.
Later, on defense, Mobley stripped the ball loose, watched it go out of bounds and forced a turnover. Then came a loud scream that carried across the gym.
This isn’t just about volume, either. Mobley is moving with purpose and bringing edge to the floor every day. Diebler said he sees that energy consistently, and he believes Mobley may have learned plenty by watching Thornton last season.
“When you have a player like him who's dialed up like that, it helps set a tone. Bruce did that for us last year.
I think Juni got a chance to watch that and sees how important it is. He is absolutely, in his own way, which is important.
He can't try to be someone else in his own way. He's done it at a high level.
It's really exciting for me as a coach to know you've got another player that you can rely on day-in and day-out to help set a tone.”
Mobley’s leadership isn’t limited to the loud stuff. He’s also been pulling teammates aside during practice to walk them through previous possessions. He’s taken the freshmen under his wing, challenging LJ Smith in 5-on-5 work and encouraging Anthony Thompson during shooting drills.
For Ohio State to take its next step, Mobley is becoming the center of it all. The Buckeyes have their new tone-setter, and the junior looks ready to run with the job.

Ohio State's 5-Star Miss May Set Up An Even Bigger Win
Monshun Sales choosing Indiana was a clear recruiting miss for Ohio State, but it may also have sharpened the Buckeyes next move. With the five-star defensive target off the board, attention has shifted to running back David Gabriel Georges, one of the top backs in the country and a prospect Ohio State has been pressing hard as the class takes shape.
Gabriel Georges is also being pursued by Tennessee, which makes the race more than a routine follow-up after one setback. Still, Ohio State appears to be in a strong position and could even adjust its NIL approach now that the Sales pursuit is over, a sign the Buckeyes are treating this as a chance to turn one loss into a bigger gain. Karlos May Just Gave Ohio State Fans More To Watch Closely
Karlos Mays commitment gave Ohio State another notable win on the recruiting trail, and it came with the kind of message the Buckeyes like to hear from a defensive lineman. The four-star prospect picked Ohio State over Auburn, Florida State and Georgia, pointing to the programs development track and his belief that the staff can prepare him for the next level.
There is still another recruiting watch item looming for Buckeyes fans, though, and it arrives soon. Five-star running back David Gabriel Georges is scheduled to make his college decision on July 22, with Ohio State still in the mix as one of his top options, so Mays pledge may not be the last reason to keep an eye on this class.
