Joel Klatt’s latest college football rankings came with a twist at the very top of the quarterback list.
When the FOX broadcaster laid out his top 10 players in the sport for 2026, he passed on the names most people would expect. Not Arch Manning.
Not Dante Moore. Not Julian Sayin.
Instead, Klatt put Notre Dame quarterback C.J. Carr at No. 1 among the nation’s quarterbacks.
Carr’s first season in South Bend gave Klatt plenty to like. As a freshman in 2025, he threw for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns, then helped push Notre Dame to the brink of a College Football Playoff spot before the Irish finished one place short of the field.
Klatt didn’t hide how unusual his choice might look on paper. "I love Dante Moore," he said.
"I really like Julian Sayin. I really like Arch Manning.
But guys, I cannot contain my excitement for C.J. Carr at Notre Dame, so C.J.
Carr is number three."
Part of Klatt’s case is tied to what Notre Dame could look like offensively in 2026. He called the previous version of the attack "run-based" and said, "What people failed to reealize is how explosive they were and they can be this year offensively throwing the football."
He added, "This is an offense that is going to be more quarterback-centric than it was... a year ago," and followed that by saying, "Carr could have a monster year."
Still, the pick raises eyebrows when measured against the numbers. Carr finished 51st nationally in passing yards last season. Sayin threw for nearly 1,000 more yards, Manning put up 3,163 passing yards and 26 touchdowns in a tough season, and Moore posted 3,565 yards and 30 scores.
Notre Dame also enters 2026 with some notable losses on offense. Jeremiyah Love is the biggest one, but Jadarian Price is gone too, and the Irish bring back only one player who had double-digit catches a year ago.
Klatt’s list leaned heavily toward Notre Dame overall. He ranked Irish cornerback Leonard Moore as the second-best player in the country, behind only Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
That puts a spotlight on a program that came close to the title game in 2024 before losing to Ohio State in the CFP final, but still has not won a national championship since 1988. If Klatt’s projections are right, Notre Dame could have the nation’s top quarterback and top defender staring everyone in the face on Saturdays.
