Jeremiah Smith Is Rewriting Ohio State History Faster Than Anyone Expected

Jeremiah Smith cements his legacy at Ohio State by shattering long-standing reception records in a standout performance against Iowa.

Jeremiah Smith keeps carving up the Ohio State record book, and Saturday at Kinnick Stadium gave him another line all to himself.

The junior wideout became the Buckeyes’ career receptions leader against Iowa, hauling in a seven-yard throw from Julian Sayin in the third quarter to catch No. 206 of his Ohio State career. That pushed him past Emeka Egbuka, who finished with 205 receptions from 2021 to 2024.

Smith was already putting together a huge night when the record fell. He had six catches for 111 yards and a touchdown in the first half, then reached 10 receptions for 188 yards and two scores by the time he broke the mark.

It’s the latest milestone in a season that has already seen Smith run down another major standard. Two weeks ago against Kent State, he passed Michael Jenkins to become Ohio State’s career receiving yards leader. That made him the first Buckeye to reach 3,000 career receiving yards.

Smith’s climb to the top has been fast and relentless. As a true freshman in 2024, he caught 76 passes for 1,315 yards and helped Ohio State win a national championship. He followed that with 87 receptions in 2025, the third-most in a single season in program history, and helped lead the Scarlet and Gray to the Big Ten Championship Game and back to the College Football Playoff.

Through four games in 2026, Smith had 33 catches, including a career-high 12 against Illinois on Sept. 26. Entering Saturday, he stood at 196 career receptions, nine behind Egbuka.

Egbuka had set the previous Ohio State receptions mark in the national championship game against Notre Dame in January 2025, when he moved past K.J. Hill’s total of 201.

Egbuka needed four seasons to get there. Smith reached the top in his junior year and in just the 34th game of his career.

The receptions record came on the heels of another major passing of the torch this season. With Smith also overtaking Jenkins in career receiving yards and Chris Olave’s touchdown record falling Saturday, he now owns all three major Ohio State career receiving records.

Ohio State Just Delivered The Kind Of Road Win Fans Needed

Ohio State went into Kinnick Stadium and delivered the sort of response win its fans had been waiting for, beating Iowa 31-14 and handing the Hawkeyes their first loss of the season. The Buckeyes controlled the game on both sides of the ball, piling up 484 total yards while keeping Iowa to 238 and a paltry 39 rushing yards, which made this feel less like a tense road test and more like a statement about the gap between the two teams.

Jeremiah Smith was at the center of it, turning the trip into one of those performances that travels well beyond the box score. He finished with 11 catches for 206 yards and two touchdowns, giving Ohio State a dynamic edge whenever it needed one and helping offset a couple of turnovers forced by the defense. For a team that needed a clean, convincing road result, this was exactly the kind of night it was looking for. [Read more 🡒]

Jeremiah Smith kept the Buckeyes moving in Iowa City, turning a road test against the Hawkeyes into another showcase for Ohio States passing game. Ohio State Just Earned The Big Ten Spot Fans Wanted Most

Week 5 brought a clearer picture of the Big Ten race, and Ohio State came out of it looking like the conference team fans expected to see at the top. The Buckeyes handled Iowa in a game that carried more weight than a typical early-season road test, adding a quality win to a rsum that is starting to separate from the pack as the league standings and the national picture begin to take shape.

The rankings around them still have plenty of movement left, with Indiana continuing to push forward, Oregon and UCLA drawing attention for different reasons, and Michigan still trying to sort out its own path. But Ohio States recent momentum is the kind that can hold up as October approaches, especially if the Buckeyes keep matching style points with results in the weeks ahead. [Read more 🡒]
