Jeff Okudah knows elite cornerback play, and he didn’t exactly slam the door when asked whether he could survive a one-on-one matchup with Jeremiah Smith.
The former Ohio State star, who was the best corner in the country during his senior season, gave a surprisingly measured answer when 10 TV’s Adam King asked him who would win that battle. Rather than talk himself up, Okudah kept it simple.
"Yeah, Jeremiah can go. I'd like to say it would definitely be a competitive battle."
That’s a pretty striking response from a player who built his reputation by erasing receivers. Okudah was a first-team All-Big Ten selection and a Unanimous All-American in 2019, then went third overall in the 2020 NFL Draft.
At Ohio State, he was as good as it gets. He was so clean in his senior season that he never drew a penalty.
The respect cuts both ways here. Jeremiah Smith has already earned a reputation as a special talent, and Okudah’s answer reads like a strong compliment to just how difficult Smith can be to cover. Smith is expected to spend this season doing damage against plenty of defenders, and the source material points to him as a future top-five pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, too.
Okudah didn’t stop with Smith, either. He also had praise for Ohio State’s current defensive backs room, and he sounded genuinely optimistic about what that group can become.
"The DBs, I'm always looking at the DBs. Devin Sanchez, my Texas guy, I think he's going to have a special year.
Jermaine Mathews, I think, is going to have a tremendous year as well. It's Coach Walton, it's Coach Matty P, I think they're building something that's really special.
So I'm excited to see what they can do."
That’s a strong endorsement from someone who knows what high-level corner play looks like. Devin Sanchez, a true freshman, finished the year stronger and now has a shot at one of the starting outside cornerback spots. Jermaine Mathews already has the other one locked down.
If Smith is as dangerous as Okudah believes, Ohio State’s opponents are going to have their hands full. The Buckeyes already bring plenty of firepower on offense, and the expectation is that Matt Patricia will have the defense ready to perform at an elite level again.

Ohio States 2027 recruiting momentum picked up again over the weekend with commitments from two more prospects, giving the Buckeyes another burst of early class-building energy. Four-star offensive lineman Caden Moss, a highly regarded Missouri native, picked Ohio State after a stretch of visits and recruitment that included Ole Miss, while three-star wide receiver Jordan Donahoo of Florida added another pass-catching piece to a class that is starting to take shape on both lines and at the skill spots.
