Former Ohio State DC Jim Knowles Just Delivered A Surprising Update

Jim Knowles, a once-celebrated Ohio State defensive coordinator known for his transformative impact, navigates personal and professional upheavals as he takes on a new challenge at Tennessee.

Jim Knowles has a new chapter off the field.

The former Ohio State defensive coordinator has married his longtime girlfriend, Andi, adding a personal milestone to a career that’s already taken plenty of twists since the Buckeyes’ national title run. It’s a notable moment for Knowles as he heads into another season with a new job and, presumably, a lot of eyes on him.

Knowles’ path away from Columbus has been a bumpy one. After helping turn a struggling Ohio State defense into the best unit in football, he left right after the Buckeyes won the 2024 national championship.

Ryan Day wanted him back, but Knowles chose Penn State instead and briefly became the highest-paid coordinator in college football. That stint didn’t last long, though, as he was fired after James Franklin was dismissed.

Now he’s at Tennessee, where expectations will be immediate and loud. Some Ohio State fans still appreciate what he did for the program, while others haven’t forgiven the exit. Either way, he’s no longer coaching in Buckeye country.

There’s also a familiar warning attached to Knowles’ arrival in Knoxville: his defenses usually take time. Penn State’s unit struggled in his first year there, just as Ohio State’s did in his first season under him.

The system tends to be a slow build, and the source material says Knowles needs at least three years to turn a defense into a truly strong one. If he gets that long at Tennessee, the Volunteers should end up with a tough group on that side of the ball.

He’s also described as a strong recruiter.

The bigger question is whether Tennessee will be patient enough to wait for that payoff.

Back at Ohio State, the defense looks to be in good hands with Matt Patricia. In his first year running the unit, the Buckeyes led the nation in pretty much every statistical category, and the defense was even better on paper than the one Knowles had in 2024 during the title-winning season. Patricia has returned, and the expectation is that the group will again be nasty.

Players have praised Patricia’s coaching style, especially the way he explains why certain plays are being run and why they work. That’s a contrast with Knowles, who, according to the source material, would simply tell players to execute the call and trust the result. The results were there, but not every player loved the approach.

The Ohio State-Tennessee tension has spilled beyond coaching moves, too. Buckeye fans have grown to dislike the Volunteers since the 2024 season, especially after Tennessee fans tried to call the Shoe “Neyland North” and got shut down hard. Since then, the back-and-forth has only continued.

And now Ohio State has another chance to get one over on Tennessee, this time in recruiting. Landing David Gabriel Georges would be a major win.

Ohio State Fans May Be Overlooking A Back Who Could Matter Fast

Isaiah Wests spring was supposed to be a chance to build on a promising freshman year, but injury kept the Ohio State running back out of practices and the Spring Game. That absence pushed him out of the daily conversation around the Buckeyes, even though he already showed last season he could handle a real workload as a backup with 59 carries, 310 yards and two touchdowns.

West still looks positioned to matter quickly once the season opens, especially with the Buckeyes expecting better play up front and a more favorable offensive scheme. Those changes could give him a cleaner path to production, and while the backfield picture is still sorting itself out, Ohio State has reasons to believe West can be part of the answer fast. JT Tuimoloau Headlines July 4 Recruiting Wins Ohio State Won't Forget

July 4 has become an oddly productive date on the recruiting calendar, and Ohio State has had a hand in some of the biggest wins. The list of commitments tied to the holiday reads like a snapshot of how college football recruiting has changed, with elite prospects making high-stakes decisions that can reshape a program's future almost overnight. For the Buckeyes, the name that still stands out most is JT Tuimoloau, whose arrival helped validate the kind of national pull Ohio State continues to flex on the trail.

Tuimoloaus college career gave that decision real weight, especially during Ohio States 2024 national title season, when he was a disruptive force up front and a central part of the defenses edge. That is the kind of return programs hope for when they land a player of his caliber, and it is why these July 4 commitments linger in the memory long after the fireworks fade. Some of the other headliners in that group have already taken very different paths, which only adds to the sense that these holiday recruiting wins can echo for years. [Read more 🡒]
