Jim Knowles has a new chapter off the field.
The former Ohio State defensive coordinator has married his longtime girlfriend, Andi, adding a personal milestone to a career that’s already taken plenty of twists since the Buckeyes’ national title run. It’s a notable moment for Knowles as he heads into another season with a new job and, presumably, a lot of eyes on him.
Knowles’ path away from Columbus has been a bumpy one. After helping turn a struggling Ohio State defense into the best unit in football, he left right after the Buckeyes won the 2024 national championship.
Ryan Day wanted him back, but Knowles chose Penn State instead and briefly became the highest-paid coordinator in college football. That stint didn’t last long, though, as he was fired after James Franklin was dismissed.
Now he’s at Tennessee, where expectations will be immediate and loud. Some Ohio State fans still appreciate what he did for the program, while others haven’t forgiven the exit. Either way, he’s no longer coaching in Buckeye country.
There’s also a familiar warning attached to Knowles’ arrival in Knoxville: his defenses usually take time. Penn State’s unit struggled in his first year there, just as Ohio State’s did in his first season under him.
The system tends to be a slow build, and the source material says Knowles needs at least three years to turn a defense into a truly strong one. If he gets that long at Tennessee, the Volunteers should end up with a tough group on that side of the ball.

The Ohio State-Tennessee tension has spilled beyond coaching moves, too. Buckeye fans have grown to dislike the Volunteers since the 2024 season, especially after Tennessee fans tried to call the Shoe “Neyland North” and got shut down hard. Since then, the back-and-forth has only continued.
