Dan Orlovsky Surprisingly Grades Ty Simpson Over Fernando Mendoza

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky sparks debate by praising Ty Simpson's early season edge over Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, questioning draft prospects.

Dan Orlovsky, a familiar face on ESPN, has been diving deep into the film of the 2026 NFL Draft class quarterbacks. His analysis has sparked some buzz, especially his take on Alabama's Ty Simpson. Orlovsky claims that Simpson’s performance in the first eight games of the 2025 season stands out more than that of Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza.

During a recent segment on First Take, Orlovsky explained why he took to social media to express his thoughts on Mendoza's early-season performances for Indiana. He pointed out that Mendoza’s tape showed a lot of clean pockets, reliance on RPOs and back-shoulder fades, and some questionable footwork when his initial read was covered.

Orlovsky didn’t stop there. He brought Ty Simpson into the spotlight, asserting that Simpson’s early-season tape was significantly more impressive than Mendoza’s.

While Orlovsky isn’t yet convinced that Mendoza should be the top pick in this year’s draft, he did acknowledge that he hasn’t reviewed the last few games of the season for both quarterbacks. As it stands, Orlovsky’s perspective is somewhat unique among analysts, especially regarding his high opinion of Simpson’s early performances.

The season took different turns for both players. Simpson, who was in the Heisman conversation early on, faced challenges after Alabama’s second bye week, culminating in a tough outing against Eastern Illinois. He wrapped up the season with 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

Mendoza, on the other hand, ended his season on a high note, leading Indiana to a CFP National Championship and amassing 3,535 passing yards, 41 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Looking ahead, Mendoza has opted out of throwing at the combine, while Simpson will participate. All eyes will be on Simpson as he showcases his skills in front of NFL scouts, with his health and performance being key points of interest.
