Ohio State's New Era with Cortez Hankton: A Perfect Fit
In Columbus, Ohio, the buzz around Ohio State's spring practices is palpable, and much of it centers on the arrival of Cortez Hankton, the new wide receivers coach. Hankton, who previously shaped the passing game at LSU, steps into big shoes following Brian Hartline's move to head coach at South Florida. But if there's one thing Hankton isn't lacking, it's confidence.
"I love winning and being the best," Hankton shared with a smile. "When you step into a place like Ohio State, where the culture is already set, it’s a coach’s dream. The players here embrace the grind, and that’s what makes growth inevitable."
Hankton’s admiration for Ohio State goes back years, despite his New Orleans roots. When Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day reached out, Hankton knew it was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. Just five practices in, he's already feeling at home.
"The tradition here is rich, and the culture is something special," Hankton noted. "Coach Day has built a brotherhood grounded in tough love, and stepping into that environment has been invigorating. It’s like I’ve joined a well-oiled machine."
The wide receiver room Hankton inherits is nothing short of stacked, led by standout junior Jeremiah Smith. Alongside him are senior Brandon Inniss, true freshman Chris Henry Jr., and the talented duo of Devin McCuin and Kyle Parker-Parker having made the journey from LSU with Hankton.
Coaching Smith is a particular highlight for Hankton. "He’s a generational talent," Hankton said, clearly impressed.
"Beyond his skills, he’s a great young man with a hunger to learn. He’s like a sponge, soaking up everything we throw at him."
Hankton’s resume is impressive, having developed stars like Kyren Lacy, Malik Nabers, and more. Yet, he sees something truly unique in Smith.
"I’ve coached many competitive players, but Smith’s physical gifts set him apart," Hankton explained. "He’s nearly 230 pounds and moves with a grace that’s rare. During a drill, I bumped into him, and it was like hitting a wall."
As Hankton settles into his role, Ohio State fans have every reason to be excited. With his expertise and the talent at his disposal, the Buckeyes' wide receiver corps is poised for greatness.
