BYU Is Suddenly Right In The Middle Of The No. 1 Fight

Brian Kelly challenges conventional rankings, questioning Miami's top spot despite their impressive season.

Brian Kelly isn’t ready to hand the No. 1 spot in college football to Miami just yet.

The Hurricanes may have climbed to the top of the AP poll after a wild weekend, but Kelly said he’d still lean toward Georgia if he had to choose the team he trusts most. The former Notre Dame and LSU coach, now an analyst for CBS Sports Network, laid out his case on College Sports Radio on Sirius XM.

“By default, I’d probably go with Miami because they’re undefeated, and now their best win is still a top 25 win, but I usually go in this part of the year when you don’t have one, I go with the guy that I trust the most,” Kelly said on College Sports Radio on Sirius XM.

That coach, in Kelly’s view, is Kirby Smart.

“The guy that I trust the most to win me a game when I need a game is Kirby Smart. I just trust him.”

Kelly’s faith in Smart comes after Georgia’s huge road win over No. 6 Alabama two weeks ago, a result that briefly pushed the Bulldogs to No.

  1. But Georgia followed that up with a stunning home loss to unranked Auburn, and Smart said after the game that his team was emotionally and physically drained after the Alabama win.

Even with that setback, Kelly wasn’t willing to bury the Bulldogs.

“I know they lost the game. They were not the best team that day, but that doesn’t mean they’re not the best team in the country,” Kelly said of Georgia.

The AP poll gave Miami 40 first-place votes after the Hurricanes beat Florida State in double overtime, but 20 others went to BYU, which had its own huge day by knocking off then-No. 2 Notre Dame. BYU moved up to No. 2 and suddenly looks like a real force in the Big 12.

ESPN’s rankings took a different route, putting Ohio State at No. 1 after the Buckeyes ended Indiana’s 22-game win streak.

Kelly wasn’t interested in declaring a clear-cut best team after all that chaos.

“So long story short, I don’t know that there’s one that I would put my hat on. I think there’s a bunch of really good teams, and I think this is going to be a fun year to find out at the end.”

Ohio States Bye Week Just Became A Crucial QB Decision

Ohio States bye week has turned into more than a breather. With Julian Sayin dealing with an injury, the Buckeyes are using the open date to sort through their options at quarterback, and that means taking a hard look at freshman Luke Fahey and sophomore Tavien St. Clair as possible replacements if the position remains in flux.

Across the rivalry, Michigan has already made a change of its own, benching Bryce Underwood and moving freshman Tommy Carr into the starting role for the upcoming game against Indiana. The timing only adds to the pressure around Columbus, where the Buckeyes are watching not just their own depth chart but a busy Week 8 slate that could ripple through conference standings and shape the bigger picture in the Big Ten race. Ohio State Just Gave Fans A Classic TBDBITL Moment At The Woody

The Ohio State Marching Band brought a little extra buzz to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center this week, and the timing fit the mood around the program. With the Buckeyes in their bye week, coach Ryan Day shifted the visit there to keep the routine steady during rivalry week, while Jeremiah Smith, Jamir Perez and Earl Little Jr. were among the players who got a turn conducting and performing with the band.

It was the kind of classic TBDBITL moment that reminds everyone how tightly woven the band and football program are in Columbus. The visit also followed a recent high-profile stop for the band at a Twenty One Pilots concert at Ohio Stadium, another sign that Ohio States marching tradition keeps finding fresh ways to show up in the spotlight. Ohio State Just Made A Loud Statement About Its National Pull

Week 7 offered another reminder that Ohio State still sits near the center of the college football TV universe. The Buckeyes matchup with Indiana on FOX topped the national viewership charts, a strong showing that underscores how much attention follows Ohio State whenever it is in a marquee slot, especially against a ranked Big Ten opponent.

The rest of the top ten only reinforced how crowded the sports biggest stages can get, with notable games from the Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 all drawing major audiences. Alabama-Tennessee led the SECs weekend numbers, but Ohio States latest television footprint is the kind of data point that speaks to more than one Saturday - it speaks to the programs reach every time it takes the field.
