Nick Kurtz: A Rising Star Heating Up in the Desert
In the sun-drenched fields of Mesa, Arizona, Nick Kurtz is making waves. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year is finding his groove at the plate, just as the temperatures are climbing in the Cactus League. Heading into a matchup against the Cubs, the 23-year-old first baseman has been on a tear, going 6-for-21 (.286) with three home runs and two doubles in his last seven games.
Kurtz's start to this spring echoes the beginning of his Major League journey. After a homerless debut stretch last April, he exploded with 36 homers and 25 doubles in his final 101 games, crafting one of the most memorable rookie seasons in recent memory.
A's manager Mark Kotsay has a theory about Kurtz’s early-season adjustments, noting that larger players like Kurtz, who stands at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, might take a bit longer to find their rhythm at the plate. Kurtz himself has started to embrace this perspective, recognizing a pattern in his starts both last year and this spring.
"The more they say it, the more it makes sense," Kurtz shared. "I was hitting the ball hard early on, but it just didn’t feel right. Now, it’s starting to click."
Kurtz’s recent power surge has been marked by opposite-field homers, a hallmark of his hitting prowess. Last season, he led all Major League hitters with 18 opposite-field home runs. "When I’m hitting that way, I know things are getting close," he said, cautiously optimistic about his progress.
This spring marks Kurtz’s first full preparation period with the A’s. Last year, he had a brief stint in big league camp before returning to the minors. Now, with a full spring to gear up for a season where he’s expected to be a central figure in the A’s lineup, Kurtz is focused on maintaining his physical readiness throughout the grueling season.
"I think I got through Spring Training pretty well," Kurtz noted, emphasizing the importance of pacing himself to avoid fatigue during the season. "I want to be ready for all 162 games."
Kurtz isn’t the only power hitter in a lineup that’s been lighting up the scoreboard this spring. The A’s have been leading the league in homers and are second in runs scored, showcasing a formidable offensive unit.
“We’re excited,” Kurtz said, reflecting on the team's confidence and chemistry. "There’s a feeling here that we’re good, and we’re ready to show it."
As Kurtz continues to hone his skills, he’s not just preparing for another standout season; he’s becoming a cornerstone of a young, ambitious team with playoff dreams.
