Athletics May Be Closing In On A Front Office Hire Boston Hates

As the Oakland Athletics hunt for a new head of baseball operations, the Boston Red Sox's analytics guru, Taylor Smith, emerges as a top contender.

The Red Sox may be staring down another front-office shakeup, with assistant general manager Taylor Smith emerging as a leading candidate to run baseball operations for the Athletics.

Smith sits in a key spot in Boston’s hierarchy, overseeing research and development under chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. That makes any possible exit more than a routine personnel move; it would hit the Red Sox’s analytics operation right where it lives.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Saturday on X, formerly Twitter, that Smith is still in the mix, while another finalist appears headed back to his current team.

“Boston assistant general manager Taylor Smith remains a top candidate to take over as head of baseball operations for the A’s, sources tell ESPN. Cardinals assistant GM Rob Cerfolio, another finalist, is expected to remain with St. Louis.”

Smith arrived in Boston in October 2024 after spending parts of seven seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays. His most recent role there was director of predictive modeling, a job that fit squarely into the data-driven lane the Red Sox wanted to strengthen. Boston listed him as senior vice president and assistant general manager.

A University of Georgia graduate, Smith earned joint bachelor’s and master’s degrees in statistics, along with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, in 2018.

For the Athletics, the search for a new baseball operations leader opened after the club mutually parted ways with longtime general manager David Forst on August 7. Forst had been with the organization for 27 years. Assistant GM Dan Feinstein has handled things on an interim basis since then.

The job carries extra weight because the franchise is currently playing in West Sacramento while working toward a planned move to Las Vegas in 2028. Filling the permanent baseball operations role now would give the organization a steady hand during that transition.

For now, Smith is still just a finalist, and no agreement has been announced. But if the Athletics land him, the Red Sox would lose a significant piece of their front office at a moment when that side of the organization matters plenty.

As Front Office Search Just Took A Hit At The Worst Time

The Athletics search for a new president of baseball operations has run into an early snag, with a familiar name no longer in play. Sam Fuld, who previously served as the Phillies general manager before moving into their president of business operations role, had been offered the As top baseball-operations job. Instead, he is staying in Philadelphia, leaving Oakland to keep working through a process that already carries plenty of urgency.

For the As, the timing makes the miss sting a little more. The club is still weighing other finalists, including Rob Cerfolio and Taylor Smith, as it tries to find the right leader to steer the baseball side of the organization. With Fuld off the board and the search narrowing, the next choice becomes even more important for a franchise looking to stabilize its front office and move forward. [Read more 🡒]

Dodgers NLDS Plan Is Starting To Take Shape

As the postseason picture sharpens across baseball, the Athletics are dealing with a front-office question that could move quickly. Recent reports indicate the As may be close to naming their next general manager, a decision that would help set the tone for the next phase of a rebuild that has already put a premium on finding the right voice and structure in the front office.

The search has already drawn a familiar mix of candidates, with Sam Fuld, Jared Banner, Matt Kleine and Rob Cerfolio among the names linked to the opening. For an organization trying to turn the page cleanly and build with more direction, the timing matters almost as much as the hire itself, and this one looks like it could come together sooner rather than later.
