Spring Training Update: A's Roster Decisions Loom Large
As Spring Training winds down in Mesa, Arizona, the Athletics are narrowing down their roster with just under two weeks to go before Opening Day in Toronto. With the roster now trimmed to 46 players, the competition is heating up, particularly at third base and in the bullpen.
Third Base Battle
The third base position is a focal point, with Brett Harris recently optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. This leaves Max Muncy, Darell Hernaiz, and Andy Ibáñez in the spotlight.
Muncy, initially favored, has impressed offensively with a .292 average and a .956 OPS over 11 games. However, his defense at third is still under evaluation.
As a natural shortstop, Muncy is working closely with infield coach Bobby Crosby to adapt to the hot corner.
Crosby noted, “The progression is happening. It’s not going to be overnight, but it’s going to happen.”
Hernaiz, currently representing Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, has made a strong impression with a .308 average and a dramatic walk-off homer. Manager Mark Kotsay expressed enthusiasm about Hernaiz’s performance, emphasizing his continued importance to the team.
Meanwhile, Ibáñez is making a case with a .400 average in nine games. Claimed off waivers from the Dodgers, his versatility and experience as a super utility player add significant value.
Kotsay remarked, “When he came off the bench, it was a professional, aggressive at-bat. It’s great to have him a part of this.”
There’s a possibility all three could make the roster, depending on how the A’s structure their bench.
Bullpen and Rotation Decisions
The bullpen has one spot up for grabs, with several contenders like Luis Medina, Nick Anderson, and Wander Suero in the mix. Medina, despite some control issues, has showcased an electric arm, reaching 99 mph with his fastball. Given that he’s out of Minor League options, the A’s might need to include him on the Opening Day roster to avoid losing him to waivers.
For the final rotation spot, Jacob Lopez seems to have an edge after making his Cactus League debut following a forearm injury. With Luis Severino, Jeffrey Springs, Aaron Civale, and Luis Morales locked in, Lopez’s recovery and performance could secure him the role.
J.T. Ginn and Jack Perkins are also in the conversation, likely providing depth at Triple-A Las Vegas.
As the A’s continue to evaluate their options, these next couple of weeks will be crucial in shaping the team’s Opening Day lineup. Fans should keep an eye on these battles as they unfold, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
