Taylor Smith has moved to the front of the pack for the Athletics’ open general manager job.
The A’s have been searching for a new front office leader since they parted ways with longtime GM David Forst on Aug. 7, and while they’ve talked to multiple candidates, Red Sox senior vice president and assistant general manager Taylor Smith appears to be the name they’re focused on, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Smith interviewed with the club nearly a month ago. Before arriving in Boston, he got his start in 2018 as an analyst in the Rays’ research and development department, then worked his way up to director of predictive modeling before the Red Sox brought him over from a division rival two years ago. He’s now one of four assistant general managers under chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, alongside Raquel Ferreira, Eddie Romero and Michael Groopman.
The A’s did speak with Groopman about the job, but Smith seems to have the edge. Last week, Smith and Cardinals assistant GM Rob Cerfolio were identified as the finalists, though Cerfolio is expected to remain in St. Louis.
Sam Fuld was the Athletics’ preferred choice for the top baseball operations job, but the Phillies president of business operations and former A’s outfielder turned them down last week. Since then, the team has kept moving through its list. Other known candidates include A’s assistant GM Billy Owens, former Astros GM James Click, ex-Nationals president of baseball ops Mike Rizzo, Cubs AGM Jared Banner and Brewers AGM Matt Kleine.
Dan Feinstein, another A’s assistant GM, took over on an interim basis after Forst’s departure, but he is not being considered for the permanent role.

Athletics GM Search Takes A Turn Fans Have Been Waiting On
The Athletics search for a new general manager is still moving, and it is now at a point where fans are starting to see a clearer shape to the process. While the organization has not made anything official, the latest reporting has pointed to Taylor Smith as a potential frontrunner, giving a search that had felt open-ended a little more definition as the offseason approaches.
There is still no announcement from the club, and the job has already seen at least one path close off along the way, which is part of why this stage matters so much. For an As front office that needs stability and direction, the identity of the next GM will say plenty about what kind of rebuild the team wants to push forward, even if the final answer has not arrived yet. As Face A Major Shea Langeliers Decision This Winter
The Athletics are headed into the winter with one of their most important roster calls still unresolved, and it comes at a time when the front office is in flux. The club has yet to hire a full-time president of baseball operations or general manager since Aug. 7, leaving the next decision-maker to inherit a tricky Shea Langeliers situation as the catcher heads toward an arbitration payday and eventual free agency after the 2028 season.
Langeliers remains one of the more valuable pieces on the roster, but the question is whether Oakland wants to keep building around him or consider a move while his market still has appeal. His recent injury only complicates the picture further, making both the timing and the return on any potential trade harder to pin down for a team that already has enough uncertainty on its hands.
