As Fans Were Shaken By Ryan Laskos Frightening Injury Update

Despite a severe on-field collision and subsequent surgery, Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko remains on the road to recovery, garnering support from the baseball community.

Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko is recovering after a scary outfield collision Tuesday night in Frisco, Texas, and the club said Wednesday that he is in stable condition following surgery.

Lasko, an outfielder for Double-A Midland, went down in the bottom of the third inning when Frisco’s Dylan Dreiling sent a ball to right-center field. Lasko and teammate Devin Taylor both went after it and slammed into each other.

Taylor got up quickly, chased the ball down and fired it back into the infield, while Lasko stayed down motionless. Midland’s players and training staff rushed over, and Taylor dropped to one knee near the warning track.

Lasko was stretchered off the field and taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, where he had spinal decompression and stabilization surgery after suffering a C6-C7 vertebra fracture, according to the Athletics.

Frisco won the game 7-6 in the opening matchup of a series that runs through Sunday. Afterward, both clubs gathered in the infield with their heads bowed in support of Lasko.

“I’ve been in touch with Ryan’s mom, Patti, to pass along the organization’s support and to let her know that all of us, throughout our system, have them in our thoughts and prayers,” Athletics general manager David Forst said in a statement Wednesday. “We are incredibly grateful to Noah Huff and Audy Merrick, our athletic trainers in Midland, for their on-field actions last night, as well as to the Frisco RoughRiders and the paramedics on the scene.”

Forst also said the Athletics are sending Director of Player Development Ed Sprague to Frisco, and that mental health professionals will be available to help Midland players.

“We ask that you respect the privacy of the Lasko family and our players at this time,” Forst continued. “We will provide medical updates as they become available.”

Lasko is 24 and ranks as the Athletics’ No. 18 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. This season, he has 53 hits, 34 RBIs and 36 runs with a .209/.275/.360 slash line in 253 at-bats. He was invited to Athletics spring training on Jan. 28 before being assigned to Double-A Midland, and he reached Triple-A Las Vegas last season.

Orioles Have A Rising Extension Dilemma They Cant Ignore

Shea Langeliers has become one of the more obvious extension candidates on the Athletics roster, which is exactly the kind of development clubs hope to see when a young core starts taking shape. The catcher has already reached 20 home runs and has now put together four straight seasons with that kind of power, all while playing on a one-year, $5.25 million deal that keeps him affordable for the time being.

For the As, the appeal is easy to see: a productive catcher in his prime years, under team control now, and potentially worth securing before the price tag climbs. The organization has already shown a willingness to lock up younger pieces, and Langeliers fits the same broad logic, even if the timing and terms of any next move are still to be determined. A's Bullpen Squeeze Just Forced Another Tough Roster Decision

The Athletics bullpen has been living on the edge for a while, and the latest roster move only underscores how thin the margin has become. With injuries continuing to chip away at the staff, the club is trying to piece together enough reliable arms to get through games now while also keeping one eye on the trade deadline and the kind of help that could stabilize the group.

For the moment, the left-handed depth chart is especially tight, with Jose Suarez and Hogan Harris carrying most of that burden in different ways. Suarez has been used more in long relief, while Harris is not the sort of arm the As can lean on every day, which is why the front office is likely keeping close tabs on both internal options and outside names as it weighs how aggressively to address the bullpen before the deadline. Athletics Bullpen Problem Could Force One Deadline Move Into Focus

With the trade deadline approaching and a postseason race still in view, the Athletics are weighing whether their bullpen needs a real upgrade. Injuries have already thinned the rotation, including ace Luis Severino, which has only added pressure on a relief group that has not been steady enough overall despite carrying multiple left-handers.

That is why a veteran arm is starting to look like the kind of move Oakland may have to make if it wants to stay in the chase. The Mets are expected to be sellers, which puts a left-handed reliever on the market at the right time for a club that needs more reliability late in games, even if the A's already have some southpaw depth on hand.
