Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko is recovering after a scary outfield collision Tuesday night in Frisco, Texas, and the club said Wednesday that he is in stable condition following surgery.
Lasko, an outfielder for Double-A Midland, went down in the bottom of the third inning when Frisco’s Dylan Dreiling sent a ball to right-center field. Lasko and teammate Devin Taylor both went after it and slammed into each other.
Taylor got up quickly, chased the ball down and fired it back into the infield, while Lasko stayed down motionless. Midland’s players and training staff rushed over, and Taylor dropped to one knee near the warning track.
Lasko was stretchered off the field and taken to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano, where he had spinal decompression and stabilization surgery after suffering a C6-C7 vertebra fracture, according to the Athletics.
Frisco won the game 7-6 in the opening matchup of a series that runs through Sunday. Afterward, both clubs gathered in the infield with their heads bowed in support of Lasko.
“I’ve been in touch with Ryan’s mom, Patti, to pass along the organization’s support and to let her know that all of us, throughout our system, have them in our thoughts and prayers,” Athletics general manager David Forst said in a statement Wednesday. “We are incredibly grateful to Noah Huff and Audy Merrick, our athletic trainers in Midland, for their on-field actions last night, as well as to the Frisco RoughRiders and the paramedics on the scene.”
Forst also said the Athletics are sending Director of Player Development Ed Sprague to Frisco, and that mental health professionals will be available to help Midland players.
“We ask that you respect the privacy of the Lasko family and our players at this time,” Forst continued. “We will provide medical updates as they become available.”
Lasko is 24 and ranks as the Athletics’ No. 18 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. This season, he has 53 hits, 34 RBIs and 36 runs with a .209/.275/.360 slash line in 253 at-bats. He was invited to Athletics spring training on Jan. 28 before being assigned to Double-A Midland, and he reached Triple-A Las Vegas last season.
