The Boston Red Sox opened the MLB offseason by moving outfielder Nate Eaton to the Athletics, according to MLB insider Bob Nightengale.
Boston’s return in the deal has not been revealed, and no additional details were available at the time of the report. More information is expected as the transaction is finalized.
Eaton, a left fielder, has yet to find much traction at the big-league level with the bat. In 137 games, he has hit .221 with three home runs, 23 RBIs and 26 walks, while posting a .601 OPS. Even with those offensive struggles, he has still produced 0.9 WAR in his major league career.
His 2026 season was especially rough at the plate. Eaton finished with a .160 average, one homer and six RBIs, leaving him with limited impact offensively for Boston.
The move gives Eaton a fresh start with the Athletics, while the Red Sox have officially begun shaping their offseason plans. For now, though, the key piece of the return remains unknown.
With the first reported trade of the winter already completed, more activity could be on the way as teams start rearranging their rosters for the 2027 season.
There is also chatter that Boston could be active with Jarren Duran this offseason. Rumors that he might be dealt surfaced ahead of the World Series, and Duran is expected to be “widely expected” to be available this winter.
The Red Sox have a strong roster, but not enough depth to get past the AL Wild Card. Maybe that changes in 2027.

Athletics Face Early Offseason Calls That Could Reshape The Roster
The offseason has barely begun, but the Athletics already have some important housekeeping to do as they sort through contract options that could shape the look of next years roster. With free agency nearing, Oakland is staring at decisions on Jeff McNeil, Jeffrey Springs and Luis Severino, the kind of early moves that can quickly change the clubs payroll picture and the mix of veterans it brings back.
There is already plenty of chatter around how those calls will land, especially because each player sits at a different point in the teams winter plans. The As do not have much room for ambiguity here, and the resolution on those options should offer an early read on how aggressively they want to remake the roster before the market really starts to move. A's Offseason Pitching Plan May Start With A Familiar Arm
With a new offseason and a new president of baseball operations in Taylor Smith, the Athletics are expected to look hard at pitching upgrades as they try to reshape a staff that needs more help. Left-handed arms are part of that search, with names like Aaron Ashby in the mix as Oakland looks for options that can bring both depth and flexibility to the mound.
One familiar possibility is Sean Newcomb, whose past time with the As gives him a built-in familiarity with the organization. He has worked both as a reliever and a starter, which makes him an appealing fit for a club that can use pitching in a variety of roles, and Oakland may be willing to explore a multi-year arrangement if the reunion makes sense on both sides. A's First Taylor Smith Move Hints At A Bigger Roster Shift
The Athletics first official move since hiring Taylor Smith as president of baseball operations came with a modest but telling swap, bringing in outfielder Nate Eaton from the Red Sox for Minor League right-hander Jareth Rayo. It was the kind of transaction that fits this stage of the calendar, adding another name to the outfield mix while giving the club a little more flexibility as it starts to shape the roster under its new baseball chief.
Around that move, the roster churn kept going. The Athletics also outrighted six players to Triple-A Las Vegas after they cleared waivers, another sign that the front office is already working through its offseason housecleaning. It is still early in Smiths tenure, but the first wave of decisions suggests the As are already trimming, sorting and preparing for more changes as they try to settle the roster picture.
