Purdue’s new athletic director Tommy McClelland didn’t wait long to step into the rivalry fire.
At his introductory press conference on Thursday, McClelland tried to give Purdue fans a little jolt by taking a shot at Indiana. “We're here to win championships,” said McClelland. “If you don't want to win championships, go to Indiana”
The line landed awkwardly, and the reaction online made that clear almost immediately. In the video of the moment, what sounds like a few people laughing can be heard after the comment, but the response around it was far less amused.
That’s because Indiana and Purdue already have one of the Big Ten’s most charged rivalries, and championships are exactly the kind of thing Hoosier fans love to throw back at Boilermaker supporters. Indiana basketball fans point to the five banners on the wall at Assembly Hall and ask when Purdue is going to win an NCAA Tournament title of its own.
Curt Cignetti already set the tone on the Indiana side just over two years ago, when he spent part of his first day at Assembly Hall and told the pro-Hoosier crowd that “Purdue sucks!”
He followed that with, “but so does Michigan and Ohio State!”, which sent the basketball crowd into a frenzy.
McClelland appeared to be aiming for that same kind of rivalry spark, but his attempt didn’t get the same reception. One reaction posted online summed up the mood bluntly: “Already less than impressed with Purdue’s new athletic director hire.Why????
Why in god’s name would you say this? Do you realize how dumb this makes you look???”
The timing also made the comment feel even sharper in the eyes of fans. In football, Indiana has won last year’s title, while Purdue hasn’t won a conference game since 2023. And in both football and basketball, Purdue still holds the all-time edge in head-to-head meetings.
So while rivalry trash talk is part of the territory, McClelland’s first big moment in West Lafayette gave plenty of people something to talk about for all the wrong reasons.
Congratulations to Purdue for getting the hire done, though, and congratulations to McClelland for getting an athletic director job in the best conference in all of college sports.
