Notre Dame and North Carolina are meeting again with the recruiting gap as clear as the on-field contrast. The Irish have controlled this series for a long time, owning a 21-2 edge all-time, and they handled the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill in 2022, Marcus Freeman’s first season in charge. But both programs look different now, and Bill Belichick’s North Carolina team has already shown through three games that it can squeeze a lot out of its roster.
When the two sides are stacked up with Rivals/On3 composite rankings, the matchup tilts heavily toward Notre Dame. Still, the Tar Heels have a few players who have outperformed their high school billing, and that’s where this game gets interesting.
Notre Dame’s passing game has been the most reliable part of its offense, and that lines up neatly with the recruiting profile. Quarterback CJ Carr is ranked No. 68, and the Irish have leaned on that air attack to set the tone.
North Carolina, meanwhile, has built one of the country’s better pass defenses statistically. The Tar Heels have allowed just one passing touchdown all season, tied for No. 1 in the country.
Their best-ranked defensive players are in the secondary, with safety Greg Smith at No. 261 and cornerback Jaiden Patterson at No. 238.
Even so, some of the biggest impact players on that side weren’t highly rated coming out of high school. Jordan Faison and Peyton Waters were both unranked recruits, and both have become important pieces for their teams.
The most obvious recruiting edge for Notre Dame comes up front. The Irish offensive line includes four Top 300 recruits, and both tackle spots are stocked with elite talent in Will Black at No. 17 and Guerby Lambert at No.
- On paper, that should be a major advantage.
But the rankings don’t tell the whole story. North Carolina’s defensive line has apparently outplayed its high school profile, while Notre Dame’s offensive line is still trying to fully match its own. That gives the trench battle a little more intrigue than the numbers alone suggest.
On the North Carolina side, the offense has had its issues, but its top producers are still mostly the players who came in with stronger recruiting backgrounds. Tight end Jelani Thurman, ranked No. 117, and wide receiver Jordan Shipp, ranked No. 93, lead the Tar Heels in receiving. In the backfield, Benjamin Hall is the headliner, and his No. 1023 ranking as a three-star recruit hasn’t stopped him from outperforming that label on the field.
For Notre Dame’s defense, the key recruiting comparison comes along the defensive front. Every defensive tackle in the Irish rotation - Francis Brewu at No.
470, Armel Mukam at No. 469, Tionne Gray at No. 457 and Elijah Hughes at No. 1029 - was a three-star recruit.
That group will be tested by North Carolina right tackle Jacqawn McRoy, who was a four-star recruit and comes in at No. 199.
He’ll be lined up across from Boubacar Traore, ranked No. 56, in a matchup worth watching Saturday afternoon.
The recent class rankings also show Notre Dame operating at a higher level on the recruiting trail over the last five seasons. The Irish checked in at No. 5 in 2026, No. 12 in 2025, No. 9 in 2024, No. 12 in 2023 and No. 7 in 2022. North Carolina’s rankings were not listed.
