Notre Dame’s loss to BYU left plenty to pick apart, but the defensive plan may have been the part that stood out most. The Fighting Irish never looked especially aggressive, and BYU took notice.
That criticism came straight from the Cougars themselves. Running back Preston Rex said Notre Dame’s defense “was a little bit vanilla, a little bit conservative."
For a Notre Dame defense that has generally leaned aggressive during Chris Ash’s time in South Bend, the approach last weekend raised eyebrows. Bear Bachmeier has had trouble when pressured this season, yet Ash did not bring the blitz often enough. Notre Dame also spent too much time in zone, even with some of the country’s best cover corners on the field.
Rex said the game plan felt different once kickoff arrived.
“It was a little different when game time came because they didn’t want to give up any of those QB runs that have killed other defenses,” Rex said. “Shout out to Bear.”
He also pointed to how Notre Dame seemed focused on limiting BYU’s biggest threats.
“Legend Glasker (the top BYU receiver) has just been taking the top off of defenses. It seemed like to me they were really preparing for those two things. That opened up for me to be in the game plan a little bit more this week.”
Rex made the most of that opening, running for 66 yards on 10 carries. That mattered even more with BYU missing star running back LJ Martin.
While Notre Dame played cautiously, BYU kept mixing things up on offense and made the Irish chase answers all game long. Drayk Bowen said the Cougars used a wide range of wrinkles.
“Trick plays, quarterback throwback, different types of reverses, sweeps, just routes that they kind of threw in last week that we hadn’t seen before,” linebacker Drayk Bowen said. “They used our weaknesses against us.”
Notre Dame now gets a week to reset before facing Navy, a matchup in which the Irish should have little trouble early and often. Then comes Miami, and that stretch will put even more pressure on Mike Denbrock and especially Chris Ash to clean things up fast.

Notre Dames BYU Loss Just Took On Even Bigger Meaning
UCLAs fast start under first-year coach Bob Chesney has become one of the early national storylines, and it has added a new wrinkle to how Notre Dames season is being viewed. The Bruins are unbeaten and looking more and more like a Big Ten contender, while BYUs upset of the Irish only looks more significant with each passing week as the Cougars climb in the rankings and strengthen their playoff case.
For Notre Dame, the result is no longer just a tough loss on the schedule. It is part of a broader picture that includes a messy national race around the Irish, with Oregon also dealing with its own trouble after losing quarterback Dante Moore and seeing its playoff path become far less certain. In that context, the BYU defeat carries even more weight, because the teams Notre Dame is tied to in the broader postseason conversation are starting to look very different now. [Read more 🡒]
Marcus Freemans Notre Dame Pitch To Leonard Moore Said Everything
Marcus Freemans recruiting pitch to Leonard Moores family was as direct as it was revealing. Dr. Leonard Moore said the Notre Dame coach leaned into what makes the program demanding, pointing to the universitys academic rigor and the reality that nothing on the field would come easy, including earning snaps.
That honesty clearly landed with the family, and Moore ended up committing to Notre Dame. He quickly found his way onto the field, starting by Week 5 of his freshman season and producing enough on defense to show why the Irish were willing to bet on a player who embraced the challenge instead of expecting any shortcuts. Brady Koehler May Be Notre Dames Answer Without Marcus Burton
Brady Koehler gave Notre Dame a glimpse of what life could look like without Marcus Burton, stepping into a leading role in a preseason game against DePaul and finishing with a team-high 19 points. The sophomore forward also added 5 assists and 4 rebounds, a well-rounded showing that caught the attention of head coach Micah Shrewsberry as the Irish continue sorting out who will drive the offense this season.
Koehler was not the only young piece to stand out, either, with guard Braeden Smith adding 17 points in the same game. For Notre Dame, the bigger question now is whether Koehler can turn that kind of performance into something more lasting, giving Shrewsberry a dependable presence as the Irish adjust to the opening left by Burton's departure.
