Notre Dames 2027 Schedule Shift Carries Bigger Stakes Than Fans Realize

Notre Dame shakes up their 2027 football schedule with a return matchup against Illinois after Purdue postpones their rivalry.

Notre Dame’s 2027 football schedule took a hit from one Big Ten side and got a replacement from another.

Purdue announced Tuesday, Nov. 3, that Notre Dame is off the Boilermakers’ schedule in 2027. Shortly after, Notre Dame revealed a home-and-home series with Illinois, a matchup the Irish haven’t played since 1968.

The new series puts Illinois in South Bend on Sept. 4, 2027, with Notre Dame heading to Champaign on Sept. 2, 2028. Notre Dame has dominated the all-time series, 11-0-1, starting with a 5-0 win in 1898.

For 2027, Notre Dame already has a full-looking slate taking shape. The Irish open against Kent State on Aug. 28 in South Bend, then face road games at Michigan State on Sept. 18 and at Clemson on Oct.

  1. Home dates include Auburn on Sept. 25 and Navy on Nov. 20, while the ACC portion of the schedule also features Wake Forest on Oct. 9 in Charlotte, Virginia Tech on Nov. 6, and trips to Stanford on Nov.

27, Virginia and Duke, with those last two listed as TBD. BYU is also on the schedule, with that game marked TBD.

Purdue’s move comes with the College Football Playoff set to grow from 12 teams to 24 as soon as 2027, a change that has schools reshuffling schedules to improve their chances of getting in. In Purdue’s place, the Boilermakers added West Virginia to a non-conference lineup that also includes Miami (Ohio) and FCS opponent Albany.

In announcing the change, Purdue said the West Virginia addition “will place a pause on Purdue’s longstanding series against Notre Dame.”

The Boilermakers have lost 11 straight to Notre Dame, with their last win in the series coming in 2007. Four of those losses have come since 2021, and the last three meetings have been one-sided, with Notre Dame outscoring Purdue 171-47.

“Getting Coach Odom’s program into matchups that best serve our goals and ambitions has been a focus of mine since arriving in West Lafayette,” first-year athletic director Tommy McClelland said in a statement. “The tradition-rich rivalry of Purdue and Notre Dame, a matchup that has been played on and off 90 times in program history, will be reevaluated for potential addition to future schedules.”

Notre Dame and Purdue first met in 1896, and since 1957 the teams have played for the Shillelagh Trophy. Notre Dame leads the series 62-26-2.

The Irish also had another future series altered earlier this year. In early August, Indiana canceled its two-game set with Notre Dame for 2030-31, and Notre Dame later added a four-game resumption of its traditional series with USC from 2030-33.

Mario Cristobal Just Framed What Notre Dame Means To Miami

Mario Cristobal spent part of the buildup to Miamis matchup with Notre Dame making clear that the conversation inside the Hurricanes program is less about the noise around the game and more about the work required to win it. The Miami coach praised the Irish and their quarterback, then steered the focus back to the basics, stressing fundamentals, preparation and the kind of technique that tends to decide big games in November.

Cristobal also framed the matchup as one that demands intensity without distraction, which is a useful reminder of how much this game still means on both sidelines. For Notre Dame, that kind of respect from an opponents head coach is another sign of the standard the Irish bring into these meetings, even if the real test will come down to whether Miami can match that level when the ball is actually kicked off. Notre Dame Just Reopened The Door To A Dream 5-Star Flip

A high-profile recruiting visit is coming back into focus for Notre Dame, and it could matter a lot in the 2027 class. Kaden Henderson, a five-star linebacker who is already committed to Texas A&M, reportedly plans to be in South Bend on Nov. 7 to watch the Irish take on Miami, giving Notre Dame another chance to make its case in front of one of the nations top defensive prospects.

Henderson has been reconsidering his options as Texas A&M has stumbled and Notre Dame has kept building momentum on the field, which has reopened a door that once looked closed. No change has been made yet, and this one figures to stretch all the way to Signing Day in December, but the Irish have at least put themselves back in the conversation for a potential flip.
