Notre Dame's Rushing Surge Faces Its Biggest Test Yet

Notre Dame's offense is riding high on recent momentum, but their upcoming clash with BYU's formidable defense will put their improvements to the ultimate test.

Notre Dame’s offense is finding a better gear at just the right time, and right tackle Guerby Lambert says the shift starts with familiarity, trust and a line that’s beginning to fire as one.

After a sluggish opening stretch on the ground, the Irish have started to look far more like the unit many expected. Through their first four games in 2026, Notre Dame ran for 567 yards and averaged about 4.1 yards per carry.

Over the last two games, that number has jumped to 602 yards and 6.5 yards per carry. The surge didn’t happen overnight, but it’s becoming impossible to miss.

Lambert pointed to the growing chemistry up front and the steady influence of CJ Carr behind the line as key pieces of that progress.

"I think it's just the more reps we get with the guys," Lambert explained. "It's knowing that we have a CJ [ Carr ] behind us, getting us to the best calls, giving us a lot of confidence to just go out there and execute knowing that the backs are going to hit the right holes.

We've been meeting with the backs some more and meeting with CJ more. The more we play together, the more confidence we're building together.”

For Notre Dame, that improvement matters even more this week. BYU arrives with one of the nation’s stingiest run defenses, ranking 10th in rushing yards allowed per game at 80.4 and 19th in yards allowed per rush at 2.9. Lambert knows the Irish are stepping into a real trench fight against a defense that plays with force and discipline.

"They're an extremely physical team," Lambert said of the BYU defense. "They play together.

One thing I’ve noticed is teams that play together are scary teams to play because they're willing to do anything for each other. Physicality is a big part.

We just have to continue doing what we've been doing, continue to prepare the right way. It's all in practice and preparation.

Seeing what we can do to elevate from last week. Checking out the new look that they might give us and then try and execute."

Even with the challenge ahead, Notre Dame heads to Provo with growing confidence in its front. The Irish have kept their pass protection strong while the run game has steadily come alive, and Lambert says that belief is spreading through the group.

"It just keeps growing," Lambert answered when asked if the confidence level of the offensive line continues to grow. "Our confidence just keeps growing as a team overall. In the backs, knowing that we have a guy like CJ getting us to the perfect calls every single time and just give us a lot of confidence to go out there and execute our job.”

Saturday night is shaping up as a top-tier matchup decided in the trenches, with Notre Dame’s offensive and defensive lines set to test themselves against BYU’s physical, experienced front. The Cougars carry the kind of reputation that demands attention, and the Irish will need their line play to match the moment.

Notre Dame Just Got Fresh Bulletin Board Material Before BYU

With Notre Dame preparing for BYU, the Cougars have already started framing the matchup around the challenge of slowing down freshman quarterback CJ Carr. Linebacker Jake Clifton spoke ahead of the game and made it clear that BYU intends to bring heat, talking about a plan to make Carr uncomfortable and lean on a physical style that will put the Irish offensive line in focus.

Clifton also balanced that edge with respect for Notre Dames program and the players wearing the blue and gold, treating the game like another step on the schedule even as the rhetoric sharpened. For Notre Dame, though, comments like that are exactly the kind that can linger in a locker room and add a little extra energy to a game already carrying plenty of attention. [Read more 🡒]

CJ Carr Is Forcing BYU To Rethink How It Defends Notre Dame

Ahead of Notre Dames meeting with BYU, Cougars defensive coordinator Brady Poppinga laid out the challenge of trying to slow CJ Carr, and it starts long before the ball is snapped. Poppinga said the plan has to be about creating confusion for the Irish quarterback, because Carr has shown the kind of arm strength and field awareness that can punish a defense if it gives him a clean pre-snap picture.

Carrs rise has forced opponents to treat Notre Dames passing game with extra caution, especially when he can extend plays and find answers both from the pocket and outside of it. Through this season, he has completed 70% of his passes with 16 touchdowns and one interception, a line that helps explain why BYU is approaching him as more than just another young quarterback on the schedule. BYU's Unbeaten Start Faces Its Toughest Test Yet Against Notre Dame

No. 2 Notre Dame is about to get another measuring-stick game, this time against an unbeaten BYU team that has quietly built real momentum behind a 5-0 start. The setting alone makes this one stand out, but the matchup has the kind of edge that usually defines October football, with both teams bringing stout run defenses and enough balance to keep things tight for four quarters.

BYU will have to navigate the game without key running back LJ Martin, which adds another layer of difficulty to an already demanding trip. For Notre Dame, it is the sort of test that can say a lot about how complete this team really is, especially against an opponent that has yet to lose and has earned its ranking by making the most of every week.
