Rice opened its season in a way that will grab Notre Dame’s attention fast: a 31-3 win over Houston Christian with just 28 passing yards.
That number is real. The Owls barely needed the air game because the ground attack rolled all over the field.
Rice piled up 465 rushing yards, the program’s most since it ran for 496 against SMU in 2004, and 11 different players got in on the production. The Owls finished with 493 total yards and owned the ball for 39 minutes and 32 seconds, leaving Houston Christian with just 20:28 of possession.
Tyvonn Byars paced the run game with a career-best 104 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Jacurri Brown added 98 rushing yards, and Quinton Jackson scored two rushing touchdowns as Rice kept hammering away.
The defense handled its side too. Houston Christian opened with a 42-yard field goal, then never scored again.
For Notre Dame, Rice’s opener is a clear preview of a very different kind of offense. The Owls, who visit South Bend in Week 2 on Sept. 12, are built around misdirection, quarterback movement and a relentless rushing approach under coach Scott Abell. That style forces defenses to stay disciplined and trust their assignments, especially when there isn’t much time to prepare.
No. 4 Notre Dame will be a heavy favorite after opening against Wisconsin on Sunday, and the Irish should bring a clear edge in size, depth and talent. Their defensive front is also a much tougher test than Houston Christian could provide.
Still, the challenge is obvious. Rice is not coming to pass its way around opponents.
It is coming to shorten games, control the clock and make defenses chase the wrong man. Brown, the UCF transfer who won the starting job in the spring and was named a captain, is central to that plan even if he doesn’t throw often.
Every defender has to respect him as a runner.
From there, Byars, Jackson and the rest of Rice’s deep backfield can keep pressing whatever seam opens up. The Owls’ first opponent couldn’t solve the formula. Notre Dame now has the tape, and it knows exactly what kind of night could be waiting.
