Notre Dame’s linebacker room just got another jolt of validation, and Irish fans have every reason to pay attention.
Pro Football Focus released its list of the best returning linebackers in the sport for the 2026 season, and Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa landed at No. 1. Drayk Bowen also made the cut at No. 6, giving Notre Dame two linebackers inside the top six and reinforcing just how dangerous Chris Ash’s unit can be this fall.
For a player who seems to keep slipping past casual attention, Viliamu-Asa keeps stacking up the kind of praise that demands notice. He’s already been projected in one NFL Mock as a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, and PFF’s latest ranking only adds to the buzz around the Fighting Irish defender known as KVA.
“Linebacker is one of the most demanding positions in football because players are expected to do everything for a defense: defend the run, rush the passer and drop into coverage. Viliamu-Asa is the top linebacker in college football because he excels in all three areas,” Max Chadwick wrote.
PFF backed that up with the numbers. Viliamu-Asa posted an 89.7 PFF grade in 2025, which ranked second among Power Four linebackers behind only Texas Tech's Jacob Rodriguez.
His 94.0 run-defense grade was second in the FBS, and he also finished with the eighth-highest coverage grade among Power Four linebackers at 83.3. On top of that, he recorded four sacks.
The one lingering issue is health: he is coming off a torn ACL suffered in November, though PFF said he could be ready for Week 1.
That timeline remains uncertain. Marcus Freeman said earlier this month that Notre Dame is hoping to get him back soon, but he wasn’t sure whether Viliamu-Asa would be ready in time for the season opener against Wisconsin.
Bowen, meanwhile, enters 2026 healthy and looking to finish strong. Chadwick said the veteran linebacker has something to prove after a dip in production last season.
“Bowen took a slight step back as a junior, posting a 70.7 PFF grade in 2025 that was exactly 10.0 points lower than his mark from his sophomore season. He still ranks as the third-most valuable returning linebacker since 2024, according to PFF's wins above average metric. At 232 pounds, Bowen is a physical presence, recording eight sacks and 58 defensive stops over the past two seasons.”
If both linebackers deliver at the level PFF expects, Notre Dame’s defense could be even better than the hype already suggests.
