Notre Dame's defense is gearing up for a promising season, with Chris Ash entering his second year as defensive coordinator. This continuity in the coaching staff is a first for Marcus Freeman's tenure, with all three coordinators returning. Offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and special teams coordinator Marty Biagi bring stability, while Ash aims to elevate the defense from last year's strong finish.
The season began with challenges, as the Irish defense struggled early on, conceding significant points to Miami, Texas A&M, and Purdue. However, a turnaround was evident from the Arkansas game onwards, setting a solid foundation that Ash is keen to build upon.
"We're taking it slow to hone in on details," Ash emphasized. His focus is on ensuring players understand every aspect of the game, from communication to fundamental soundness. The strategy is to teach thoroughly before ramping up the pace.
Compared to last year, Ash is in a stronger position, familiar with the roster's strengths and weaknesses. This offseason, he's also adjusting to a new defensive coaching staff, aiming for cohesion and understanding.
"Last year, I was still getting to know the players and coaches," Ash noted. "This year, it's different. I know the players well, but we still have work to do with the new coaches."
The defense is poised for greatness, with a roster that could potentially be the best in the country. Key player development is crucial, and Ash is focused on addressing past issues to ensure progress.
"This year, I know what each player needs from a coaching standpoint," Ash said. "We need to ensure last year's issues aren't today's problems."
With championship aspirations, Notre Dame's roster is arguably the most talented under Freeman. The defense boasts two captains, star talent, the top cornerback in the country, and a formidable defensive line. Ash and his team are pivotal to the program's success.
