With Aneyas Williams sidelined this spring, Notre Dame's running back room is wide open, and Marcus Freeman is giving others a chance to shine. Enter Nolan James Jr., who seems to be seizing the moment. The redshirt freshman is catching the eye of the coaching staff, with whispers of him potentially stepping into the RB1 role.
Ja'Jaun Seider, the running backs coach, had high praise for James, calling him "the most mature young kid" he's had the pleasure to coach. It’s not just about his talent on the field-James is also known for his reliability and work ethic. Seider noted that James is a "do things right" kind of player, someone who’s never found himself in the doghouse and is always punctual for practices and meetings.
James is making a compelling case for a more significant role in Notre Dame's offense. His maturity is matched by his on-field performance, showing skills that are often seen in more seasoned players.
Last season, James was behind Jeremiyah Love, Jadarian Price, and Aneyas Williams on the depth chart, which limited his opportunities. He played in four games, carrying the ball 14 times for 37 yards. His standout moment came against the Arkansas Razorbacks, where he logged four carries for 22 yards, including a personal best 15-yard run.
While Aneyas Williams is expected to take the lead in 2026, the door is open for others to make their mark. Nolan James Jr. is certainly making a strong case to be part of that conversation.
