Notre Dame May Have Found A Difference-Maker Up Front

Sullivan Absher's development at Notre Dame's right guard position is proving essential to the team's offensive success, despite mixed fan perceptions.

Sullivan Absher has turned into one of the more important pieces on Notre Dame’s offensive line, even if the fan base hasn’t always agreed on what to make of him.

The 6-7, 325-pound right guard has been a lightning rod this season, with some supporters viewing him as a temporary fix until healthier options return and others believing he’s the right answer at the spot. What’s not up for debate is how the Irish line looks when No. 75 is in the starting five next to right tackle Guerby Lambert, a pairing that worked together throughout the offseason and has helped steady the front.

Absher has now made four starts this season and appears to be building on the foundation he established over the final five games of 2025. He described the emotional swings that come with the job and the way he’s handled them.

"From the outside, it does seem like the highest of highs, lowest of lows," Absher shared. "On the inside, it did feel like that at times.

You come back, and you take a step back, and you’re like, ‘This isn’t going to change the work I’m going to put in. This isn’t going to take away from my love for this university, my love for this team.’

You put all that aside, and you just flush it, and you go out and ‘Leave No Doubt’ that you can’t be left off the field.”

His 2026 debut didn’t come until the second half against Wisconsin, but once he entered, the offensive line’s play changed quickly. Notre Dame managed only 29 rushing yards in the first half, then piled up 82 in the second half as the ground game found some life. Absher said that moment stood out to him.

"It was awesome to get a chance, and to capitalize on that chance," Absher explained. "I think I brought the appropriate energy and the appropriate intent to the second-half game plan that we were going with.

I was just so proud of our team, so proud of our quarterback, so proud of our running back, so proud of our defense, for putting our heel on the ground in that second half, and we finally got things rolling on offense. It was really proud to see.”

Notre Dame still has work to do in the run game, but pass protection has been a real strength for this group, Absher included. Through four games, the Irish have done an excellent job keeping CJ Carr upright, and they rank fourth in the country in sacks allowed.

Asked what has made that protection so effective, Absher pointed to the mental side of the battle.

"I think it all starts mentally," Absher said when asked about the key to protecting Carr. "Half the battle is believing that you can do it.

Bringing the fight to them is something that we’ve really been working on as a pass-protecting unit, and I think we need to display that more. When we get our hands up and put hands on guys early, it’s a different ballgame.”

Nobody was projecting Absher to chase the Outland Trophy, but Notre Dame knew it had a lineman who could handle the job at right guard alongside Lambert and center Ashton Craig. He has kept growing over the last two seasons, and his play Saturday should matter plenty in how large the final margin ends up being for the Irish.

Notre Dames 2027 Schedule Just Got Tougher After One Opponent Bailed

Notre Dames 2027 football slate picked up a new road test this week when Virginia was added as the 12th opponent on the schedule. The Cavaliers will host the Fighting Irish at Scott Stadium on an undisclosed date, filling the opening left after Georgia Tech backed out because of changes to ACC scheduling.

The shift is another reminder of how quickly long-range schedules can change when conference rules start moving pieces around. Beginning in 2027, the ACC is requiring teams to play more league games, and Notre Dames matchup with Virginia is the latest ripple effect for a program that always has to balance its independent schedule against the realities of its ACC ties. Jaylen Sneeds Notre Dame Rise Says A Lot About This Defense

Jaylen Sneeds rise has become one of the clearer signs of where Notre Dames defense stands entering the heart of the season. Now in his fifth year, the veteran linebacker has grown into a key piece for the Irish by leaning into the programs culture and adjusting to the coaching changes around him, a path that has helped turn promise into dependable production.

Sneed has pointed to maturity and confidence as major reasons for the jump, along with his comfort in Chris Ashs defensive system. He is third on the team in tackles and continues to be one of the most important presences on that side of the ball, which makes his next step worth watching as Notre Dame keeps leaning on its defense.
