Notre Dame heads into Saturday’s battle for the Legends Trophy with everything lined up for another lopsided finish.
The third-ranked Fighting Irish are 5-0 and riding a 16-game winning streak dating back to last season. Stanford comes in at 2-3, and the numbers around this matchup point hard toward another Notre Dame blowout at Notre Dame Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind. The game is set for Saturday, October 10, at 3:30 PM ET on NBC, with Notre Dame listed as a 39.5-point favorite and the over/under sitting at 54.5.
This series has leaned heavily toward the Irish for a while now. Notre Dame owns a 25-14 edge all-time and has won six of the last seven meetings.
Every one of those six wins has come by at least 21 points, which fits the tone of this one. The prediction here is Notre Dame 63, Stanford 7.
The Irish offense looks ready to keep rolling. Notre Dame just turned in what was arguably its most complete offensive showing of the season, and certainly its most balanced, piling up 241 rushing yards and 234 passing yards in the win.
Quarterback CJ Carr has been driving the attack, and this matchup sets up perfectly for him against a Stanford defense that ranks 137th nationally in pass defense. Stanford’s defense has struggled across the board, sitting 133rd in scoring defense and total defense, and Notre Dame offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock has built the last two game plans around Carr’s throwing ability.
If that continues, the Irish offense should have a field day.
Stanford does have some production through the air. Davis Warren has thrown for more than 300 yards twice, including 396 in the comeback win over Georgia Tech.
In Stanford’s two wins, Warren averaged 353 passing yards per game. In the three losses, that number drops to 167.
The run game has been far less threatening, with Stanford averaging just 88.8 rushing yards per game and topping 90 only once, against Hawaii. That leaves the Cardinal in a tough spot against a Notre Dame front that should be able to attack the pocket and make Warren’s day miserable.
Boubacar Traore and Bryce Young are both expected to have big games off the edge.
A few of the other predictions around the matchup land in the same neighborhood. Trevor Trowbridge sees Notre Dame winning 59-6, pointing to this as the Irish’s final tune-up before the heart of the schedule and expecting Carr to stay hot after Notre Dame’s recent offensive surge.
Andrew McDonough goes even further, calling for a 56-0 shutout and noting Stanford’s struggles on offense, including a ranking of 114th nationally in total offense and 135th in rushing offense. Bryan Ault also expects Notre Dame to bounce back to the dominant form it has shown most of the season, especially after Stanford’s 57-3 loss to Wake Forest.
The common thread is simple: Notre Dame should have the size, talent, and depth to take control early and keep control. If the Irish run the ball, stay balanced, avoid giving Stanford short fields, and finish drives in the red zone, the gap should widen fast. Stanford may stay in the game for a stretch, but the expectation is that Notre Dame pulls away and leaves no doubt.

CJ Carrs Draft Outlook Could Decide Notre Dames Next Season
Rob Rangs latest Fox Sports mock draft put a spotlight on Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr, projecting him to the Minnesota Vikings at No. 30 overall. In that scenario, Carr would come off the board as the fifth quarterback selected, trailing Arch Manning, Trinidad Chambliss, Dante Moore and Drew Mestemaker, a grouping that frames his place in the early draft conversation and hints at where evaluators think he fits among the positions rising names.
For Notre Dame, the projection matters because it raises a familiar question every program hopes to face with an appealing young quarterback: leave early or come back and keep building. If Carr were to stick around another season instead of declaring, it would shape the Irishs outlook in a major way, giving the staff and fans a clearer path to more continuity at the position while also keeping the draft speculation hanging over his future. Notre Dame Defense Has Something To Prove Against Stanford
Notre Dames defense comes into the Stanford game with a clear chance to steady itself after a rough showing against North Carolina, and Chris Ashs group knows the spotlight will be on it from the opening drive. The matchup is appealing on paper, too, because the Cardinal offense has struggled, giving the Irish a chance to reset the tone up front and show the kind of consistency that has been missing lately.
There should be opportunities for Notre Dames defensive line to make an impact, and one of the more interesting individual battles is Boubacar Traore against Kahlil House. The bigger question hanging over the Irish, though, is whether Leonard Moore will be available at cornerback, a detail that could shape how much pressure the defense can safely bring while trying to put together the kind of performance it has been looking for. Notre Dame Offense Has A Chance To Build Real BYU Momentum
Notre Dames offense has spent the first five games of the season settling into a steadier rhythm, and the next stop on the schedule offers another chance to keep it rolling. Stanfords defense has had its own recent issues, which puts the spotlight on a Fighting Irish attack that has shown enough balance to believe it can keep building, especially if the run game finds more traction.
CJ Carr has been central to that growth, coming off back-to-back games with at least three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, something no Notre Dame quarterback had done in 30 years. With BYU looming as the bigger measuring-stick game, this week feels less like a finish line than a proving ground, a chance for the Irish to sharpen the details and carry some real offensive momentum into a matchup that will say more about where they stand.
