Notre Dame finally got the linebacker help it had been hunting for, and it came in the form of one of the more coveted defenders in the 2027 class.
On Saturday afternoon, the Irish landed a commitment from 4-star linebacker Roman Igwebuike, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect out of Mount Carmel High School in Chicago. According to 247Sports Composite Rankings, Igwebuike is the No. 123 player in the 2027 class, the No. 9 linebacker, and the No. 8 player in Illinois.
The competition for his pledge was loaded. Notre Dame beat out Clemson, Indiana, Missouri, and Tennessee, while the linebacker also held offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Minnesota, NC State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Texas, USC, Wisconsin, and others.
Igwebuike announced his decision on the CBS Sports College Football YouTube channel, joining a wave of prospects who made Saturday their commitment day. For Notre Dame, it was a much-needed win at a position that has been a headache throughout the 2027 cycle.
The Irish had already missed on several other linebackers, including 5-star Kaden Henderson and in-state 4-star Sean Fox. They also lost Noah Glover and Amarri Irvin after both had previously decommitted. That made linebacker the toughest spot for Notre Dame to solve in this class, and Igwebuike’s pledge gives the staff some relief.
His junior season explains why so many programs were in the mix. Last year at Mount Carmel, Igwebuike piled up 111 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles while helping lead the school to an Illinois Class 8A championship.
Notre Dame also gets a little extra satisfaction from this one. Clemson was among the schools that believed it had a real chance, and Indiana was in the hunt as well, giving Marcus Freeman another recruiting win over Curt Cignetti’s Hoosiers.
With Igwebuike on board, Notre Dame now has 22 commitments in its 2027 class. The Irish entered Saturday with the No. 2 class in the cycle and will inch closer to Texas A&M, which currently sits at No. 1.
