Notre Dame Faces A Defining Road Test At Undefeated BYU

Under the bright lights of Provo, Notre Dame's formidable winning streak faces a fierce challenge against an undefeated BYU in a primetime showdown.

Notre Dame’s October trip to Provo is set for a Saturday night stage, and the setup is as good as it gets: two unbeaten teams, a primetime window and a road test that should tell us plenty about both sides.

The matchup, announced today, will kick off on October 17 in Provo, Utah. It’s Notre Dame’s first visit there since 2004, when the Irish fell 20-17. It’s also a game that drew plenty of attention earlier this offseason after the annual Notre Dame-USC rivalry came to an end, with BYU’s rise helping strengthen the Cougars’ overall schedule in a way that now looks very real.

BYU has spent the early part of the season making that case on the field. Kalani Sitake’s team is 4-0 for the third straight year, already 2-0 in conference play and likely to still be unbeaten when Notre Dame arrives, with Iowa State up next on Saturday.

The Cougars are being driven by quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who has opened 2026 with 704 passing yards and six touchdowns. He’s been just as dangerous as a runner, adding 130 yards and four scores on the ground while throwing only one interception.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, is rolling in a way that fits Marcus Freeman’s best stretches. The Irish are 5-0 for the first time under Freeman and carrying a 15-game winning streak, with every victory in that run coming by 10 points or more. They head into this weekend with Stanford visiting South Bend for a Legends Trophy matchup, and that streak will be on the line again there.

The time change gives the game a little twist, too. With the two-hour difference, kickoff will come at 5:30 PM local time in Provo, but it still lands squarely in the night-game bucket. That’s a setting Freeman and Notre Dame know well.

Under Freeman, the Irish have played 11 primetime games away from Notre Dame Stadium and gone 7-4 in those contests. Three of those wins came in Shamrock Series games where Notre Dame was technically the home team - against BYU in 2022, Army in 2024 and Wisconsin in 2026. In true road primetime games, Notre Dame is 4-4.

The road-night résumé under Freeman includes wins at Duke and Stanford in 2023, Texas A&M in 2024 and Stanford in 2025. The losses have come against Ohio State and USC in 2022, Louisville in 2023 and Miami in 2025. Against ranked teams on the road at night, Freeman’s Irish are 2-4, and that number is sure to hang over the build-up to a trip that already has the feel of a measuring stick game.

Jeremiyah Loves Frustrating Cardinals Role Is Becoming Hard To Ignore

Jeremiyah Loves first NFL months have already come with a dose of reality for the Arizona Cardinals, who leaned on the rookie back carefully even after making him the third overall pick. His usage has been a talking point in a difficult start, and it became even more noticeable in the late stages of a loss to the New York Giants, when the Cardinals were trying to piece together a critical final drive without much help from the backfield.

Head coach Mike LaFleur said Love was not part of that closing sequence because of how the two-minute offense was structured, with the passing game not involving running backs in that situation. Love has also acknowledged the grind of the season and the need to manage his workload so he can stay effective over the course of the year, a reminder that his role is still being defined even as expectations around him remain high. Clemson Just Made Miamis Poll Rise Even Harder To Ignore

Notre Dames latest climb in the AP Top 25 and AFCA Coaches Poll came after a solid road win at North Carolina, part of another weekend that nudged the Irish a little higher in the playoff conversation. Miami also moved up after its emphatic 41-13 win over Clemson, and the ripple effect from that result is hard for Notre Dame fans to miss, especially with both teams still positioned to shape the top of the rankings in the weeks ahead.

The schedule only sharpens the intrigue from here. Notre Dame still has plenty to prove before the College Football Playoff field is set, and Miamis rise adds another layer of pressure to every result involving the Irish. The two teams are set to meet on November 7, a game that could matter a great deal for seeding and, depending on how the next stretch goes, the overall shape of the postseason race. [Read more 🡒]

Marcus Freeman Sends A Clear Message After Notre Dame's Gritty Win

Notre Dame left Chapel Hill with a 37-26 win over North Carolina, and Marcus Freeman spent much of his postgame conversation pointing to the parts of the performance that travel. He praised the offensive line for holding up well and singled out Jordan Faison for the sharp route running that helped the offense stay on schedule, the kind of detail Freeman has leaned on all season when talking about how this group wants to play.

Freeman also framed the victory as another test of the teams mental toughness, especially in a game that never really let the Irish fully relax. With Stanford next on the schedule and the Legends Trophy in the mix, the message was clear: Notre Dame has the physical pieces in place, but the bigger challenge now is carrying that edge and composure into another meaningful game.
