Notre Dame’s fall camp is wrapped, and the focus now shifts to Wisconsin on September 6 as the Irish move into their in-school practice schedule with the opener 12 days away.
After camp, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, defensive coordinator Chris Ash, tight ends Cooper Flanagan and James Flanigan, defensive tackle Armel Mukam and punter Jasper Scaife all spoke about where the team stands, what they’ve seen from younger players and how much growth has come during the offseason.
One of the clearest takeaways from Denbrock was the way the younger receivers have started to separate themselves in a crowded room. He didn’t single out just one name, but he made it clear the group has given him plenty to like.
"Yeah, it's been a little bit of this guy this day, that guy that day," Denbrock shared. "You know, I like that we're developing some really nice depth there and some really quality go-to pieces when they're called upon.
There's a good collection of a number of guys. I'd hate to just point out one or two guys, to be honest with you, because I really like what that room is doing.
They've been on the grind and have been improving day to day, and I like where the young guys are headed. I think there's some quality depth in that room that's going to continue to be developed."
On the other side of the ball, Ash is already bracing for a Wisconsin team that looks different from the one Notre Dame has prepared for in the past. His message was simple: expect changes, and expect a real test once the game begins.
"They have a bunch of new players," Ash explained. "It's just a different team, a different offense.
It's going to be a game of adjustments once we get to the stadium, once we get to game day and the game starts and we figure out what they're going to do. They've got good coaches, they have a good scheme, they know what they're doing, they have a bunch of new players and there's a lot of excitement.
We expect their best."
Flanagan said the offseason has done a lot for his confidence, and he pointed to both spring and fall camp as important steps in getting him to that point.
"Definitely a lot," Flanagan said emphatically. "I think fall camp was big, but I think spring was big. You know, just being able to play football again and, you know, trusting myself and trusting my body was great."
Mukam’s return to Notre Dame came down to familiarity, comfort and the chance to work with a staff he believes in. He said coming back felt natural, especially with Charlie Partridge on the coaching staff.
"You know, I always loved Notre Dame, loved the locker room and loved the coaching staff," Mukam shared. "For me, it was easy to just come back home.
Obviously, you hire someone like Coach [ Charlie ] Partridge, who has a ton of expertise and coached up a lot of players at the highest level. You know, it just made it even easier for me to come back home."
