Notre Dame Defense Faces A Massive Question Before Miami Showdown

Notre Dame faces a defensive dilemma as key players, including two-time captain Drayk Bowen, are sidelined ahead of their crucial matchup against top-ranked Miami.

No. 4 Notre Dame could be leaning on its depth in a big way Saturday when No. 1 Miami arrives, because two of the Irish’s starting defenders are suddenly in doubt, and another key piece remains unavailable.

Defensive tackle Francis Brewu is listed as questionable with a knee injury after leaving the 35-13 win over Navy in the first quarter and never returning. He was on the sideline for the rest of the game after what appeared to be a lower-body injury in Foxborough, Mass.

Brewu, a 6-foot-1, 285-pound interior force, has become Notre Dame’s best pass-rushing presence inside and a possible Day 2 NFL Draft pick. He has 16 tackles, including 3.0 for loss, along with 2.0 sacks and nine pressures, which rank third on the team according to Pro Football Focus.

Linebacker Drayk Bowen is in even tougher shape. He was hurt in the first half against Navy after getting tangled in a pile and needed help from two athletic trainers to leave the field. USA Today’s John Brice, who also contributes to the Irish Illustrated Insider podcast, reported that the injury is “significant” and likely ends Bowen’s season, and Notre Dame’s Monday availability report backed that up by listing him as out against the Hurricanes.

Bowen’s absence is a major blow. The senior is a two-time captain, wears the green dot for direct communication with the coaching staff, and leads the Fighting Irish with 45 tackles, including 1.0 for loss. He also ranks third on the defense in snaps played.

That likely opens the door for Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa to step into the starting lineup. He’s been dealing with a thumb injury since the North Carolina game earlier this month, missed Stanford, then wrapped his hand to play at BYU. Notre Dame gave him extra time to recover with an idle week and then held him out of Navy.

"Kyng, we tried. It's a healing thing," Freeman said in his postgame remarks after Navy. "He just wouldn't be available for this game, but we expect him to be back for next week."

When Bowen is off the field, Viliamu-Asa has typically handled the green dot responsibilities. He also brings production of his own, with 15 tackles, 1.5 for loss and an interception.

Notre Dame’s defensive injury list doesn’t stop there. Safety Brauntae Johnson remains out, and the Irish will also be without starting field corner DJ McKinney.

There’s also uncertainty around defensive tackle Jason Onye, who is questionable with a knee injury after suffering it on a chop block. Freeman addressed the play this way: "One of them got called in the second half," Freeman said. "One of them didn't with Onye."

Notre Dames Rome Opener Put One Irish Freshman Under The Spotlight

Notre Dames season opened in memorable fashion in Rome, where the Irish edged Villanova 74-72 and got an early look at how their new pieces might fit together. Shrewsberry led the way with 15 points, Koehler added 16 points and made key defensive plays, and the game had the feel of a showcase from the start, with the Irish already drawing attention for how they handled a high-level opponent on a stage far from South Bend.

The biggest spotlight, though, landed on freshman Luigi Suigo, whose college debut came with plenty of eyes on him because of his NBA draft potential. He finished with seven points, a modest start by the box score but still a meaningful first step for a player viewed as a possible first-round pick. Villanovas Perkins scored 18 points in the loss, but for Notre Dame, the opener was as much about seeing how Suigo settles in as it was about starting the year with a win. [Read more 🡒]

Notre Dame Gets A Real Opening Against No. 1 Miami

Miamis defense is under the microscope heading into a trip to South Bend, and Mario Cristobal made it clear the Hurricanes know why. After a shaky showing against North Carolina, he pointed to tackling and finishing plays as issues that have to be cleaned up fast, especially with Notre Dame waiting and a quarterback in CJ Carr who can make defenses pay when they lose contain.

For the Irish, that kind of self-scout from the No. 1 team is exactly the opening this matchup seemed to promise. South Bend will get a heavyweight game with real stakes, and Notre Dames offense now has a chance to test a Miami defense that is being asked to sharpen its execution and communication in a hurry. Notre Dame Defense Is Running Thin At The Worst Possible Time

Notre Dames defense took another hit in the Navy game, and the timing could hardly be worse with Miami looming. Linebacker Drayk Bowen and defensive tackles Jason Onye and Francis Brewu were among the players injured, adding to a unit that has already been stretched by earlier setbacks this season.

The Irish have not offered specific recovery timelines, leaving their status for the Miami matchup uncertain and the depth chart in a familiar state of flux. For a defense already trying to patch together answers, every new injury narrows the margin for error and makes the next week feel even more important. [Read more 🡒]
