Cowboys May Have To Get Rid Of Brandon Aubrey After Contract Twist

Cowboys' contract talks hit a hurdle as negotiations with star kicker Brandon Aubrey stall, posing a challenge for the team's offseason strategy.

The Dallas Cowboys are off to a promising start this offseason, securing running back Javonte Williams with a new three-year deal. This move allows them to turn their attention to other key players, like George Pickens, who has received the franchise tag as the team works towards a long-term agreement.

But Pickens isn’t the only star the Cowboys need to focus on. Kicker Brandon Aubrey is another critical piece of the puzzle in Arlington, and negotiations with him have hit a bit of a snag.

Cowboys co-owner Stephen Jones recently shared that talks with Aubrey have been ongoing since before the season began, but they have yet to find common ground. “We just finished up Javonte,” Jones noted.

“We’ve been in talks with Aubrey (since) before the season started. That’s been a journey.

We haven’t been able to get to a point where we can all agree so it hasn’t gotten done, but we’d love to get him done.”

Aubrey's talent makes him a hot commodity. If the Cowboys can't lock him down with an extension, he will become a restricted free agent.

This means Dallas would have the chance to match any offer he receives from other teams. Given Aubrey's record-setting performances, he’s likely to attract plenty of interest.

He’s made a name for himself with six field goals from beyond 60 yards and became the first player ever to hit three field goals of 55+ yards in a single game. His accuracy is impressive, with over 88 percent success on his attempts, including 35 out of 44 from at least 50 yards.

If an extension isn’t reached, the Cowboys will need to consider tendering him a restricted free agent contract. This strategy would allow them to receive compensation if they opt not to match an offer sheet and Aubrey decides to leave in free agency. The Cowboys face an important decision as they navigate these contract discussions, aiming to keep their roster competitive for the upcoming season.
