Brian Kelly Is Dragging LSU Back Into An Ugly National Debate

Paul Finebaum takes Brian Kelly to task for his remarks on Steve Sarkisian, highlighting the inconsistency in his criticisms.

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum took another shot at Brian Kelly, this time blasting the former LSU and Notre Dame coach for comments aimed at Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and Arch Manning.

On The Matt Barrie Show, Finebaum ridiculed Kelly’s take that Sarkisian is responsible for Manning’s struggles this season and said Kelly “cannot do anything right” aside from landing “off-brand jobs to land.”

“It was on this day a year ago that Brian Kelly was fired,” Finebaum said. “(James) Franklin had already been fired.

By the way, I want to congratulate Brian Kelly for calling out Steve Sarkisian this week. He picked a good week to show what a big-time Sirius XM radio analyst he is.

Brian Kelly cannot do anything right, other than now I’m sure he’s trying to find one of these off-brand jobs to land.”

Finebaum’s criticism comes with a twist, though. He offered a nearly identical opinion of Sarkisian before Texas beat Ole Miss last week.

“I’m beginning to wonder if Arch Manning should even start. I know he will, and he’s capable of leading them to a win, but I blame Sarkisian for every aspect of this,” Finebaum said prior to the game, via Awful Announcing.

His latest blast at Kelly also stands out because just over two weeks ago, Finebaum was on the same show criticizing LSU for moving on from Kelly in the first place.

“LSU paid $53 million to get rid of the coach who didn’t look this bad early on in his tenure. It’s worth remembering that,” Finebaum said on The Matt Barrie Show earlier this month.

And earlier this year, he described what it was like to interview Kelly every Monday for several seasons.

“A couple years ago, Nick Saban started doing Pat McAfee every week, so we got a call from LSU and Brian Kelly saying he wanted to do our show every week,” Finebaum said in July, via The Big Lead. “Now I don’t know if any of you know Brian Kelly, spending 20 minutes with Brian Kelly for three consecutive years every Monday?

I think I would rather have a colonoscopy on the stage right now without anesthesia. It’s that painful … So there’s always a trade-off, and we bought it and ended up dying with it.”

Finebaum’s view of Kelly, it seems, changes with the weather.

Notre Dame Could Add A Veteran Defensive Voice Fans Will Debate

Dave Doerens name is suddenly floating around a role that would be a little unusual but not hard to understand. The former NC State head coach, now a free agent after being fired earlier this season, has long been around the kind of defensive football Notre Dame tends to respect, and his history includes stops at Drake, Wisconsin and Northern Illinois before his run as a head coach.

What makes the idea worth watching is the connection to defensive coordinator Chris Ash, who previously worked with Doeren. If Notre Dame were to consider him for a part-time defensive analyst spot, it would bring in a veteran voice with plenty of background and, given his mixed track record as a head coach, plenty of room for fans to debate whether he is the right fit for the job. Notre Dame Commit Abraham Sesay Just Added More National Buzz

Abraham Sesay keeps adding to a rising profile that already has Notre Dame followers paying attention. The 2027 Irish commit is set to be officially honored as a Navy All-American at Downingtown East High School in Exton, Pennsylvania, on October 30, 2026, part of the Road to the Dome tour that will recognize 100 All-Americans with jersey presentations ahead of the main event.

Sesay is also scheduled to take part in the annual East vs. West All-American Bowl game on January 9, 2027, in San Antonio, Texas, another marker of how quickly his national reputation has grown. For Notre Dame, it is the kind of off-field momentum that comes with landing a recruit whose name is starting to carry weight well beyond the usual prep recruiting circles. [Read more 🡒]

Notre Dames Offense Has One Big Chance To Regain Momentum

Notre Dame heads into its game with Navy looking for a cleaner offensive rhythm, and the matchup gives the Irish a chance to reset in a few key spots. Navys pass defense has been a vulnerable area, which puts added attention on how Notre Dame uses its receivers and protects the quarterback, especially with Micah Gilbert and Anthonie Knapp in the spotlight as the unit tries to find more consistency.

CJ Carr is part of that equation too, because Notre Dames passing game still needs sharper execution to turn the opportunity into something meaningful. The setup is there for the Irish to regain some momentum, but it will take better individual play and a more dependable offensive structure to make the most of a defense that has shown it can be attacked through the air.
