Alabamas Title Surge Now Faces The One Test Fans Care About

Kirk Herbstreit reevaluates his national title predictions, putting Miami, Georgia, and Alabama ahead of previously favored Notre Dame as the college football season heats up.

Kirk Herbstreit is not backing away from his preseason national title pick on Notre Dame just yet, but after five weeks, he’s clearly widening the lens.

On his Nonstop podcast with former Ohio State receiver Joey Galloway, the ESPN analyst said the Fighting Irish still deserve scrutiny, then pointed to Miami, Georgia and Alabama as the programs he’d place in the same conversation for the sport’s top team.

“Because for me, it feels like the two best teams right now, I would put Miami in that discussion. I would put Georgia in that discussion.

I would put Alabama in that discussion. They're actually playing each other this weekend,” Herbstreit said.

He then pushed Galloway on whether Notre Dame and Texas still belonged near the top. “Would you put Notre Dame right now in that discussion, even though they haven't been tested? Would you put Texas in that discussion, even though they're the number one team in the country?”

Galloway, who also had Notre Dame winning it all before the season, didn’t jump off the bandwagon. “I don't feel as good about Notre Dame as I did when we began the season.

That doesn't mean I feel bad about them. That means I don't feel as good,” he said.

The Irish are 5-0 and ranked No. 3 in the AP poll, but the skepticism comes from the schedule. Notre Dame has handled Wisconsin, Rice, Michigan State and Purdue by a combined 169-33, then survived its closest test with a 37-26 win at North Carolina. CJ Carr has been sharp through the first month, completing 88 of 124 passes for 1,197 yards with 13 touchdowns and one interception.

The numbers beneath the surface still paint Notre Dame in a strong light. The Irish sit first nationally in net expected points added per play, a measure adjusted for opponent, home field and garbage time, and sixth in adjusted defense. Texas is third in adjusted defense, but only 49th on offense.

Notre Dame gets Stanford at home Saturday before heading to No. 8 BYU on Oct. 17.

Herbstreit’s latest comments came after Miami’s 41-13 rout at Clemson on Oct. 3, a result that left the No. 4 Hurricanes alone atop the ACC at 5-0 overall and 3-0 in league play. Darian Mensah passed for 227 yards and a touchdown, added a 34-yard scoring run, and Mark Fletcher Jr. rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns as Miami piled up a 192-55 edge on the ground.

The Hurricanes are sixth nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency, and they’ll also get Notre Dame later this season. Miami visits South Bend on Nov. 7, one year after beating the Irish 27-24 in the 2025 opener and claiming the final at-large playoff spot over them.

Georgia has built its own case with points, plenty of them. The No.

2 Bulldogs are 5-0 and 3-0 in the SEC, and their 257 points through five games are just one shy of the 1910 team’s program record for that span. They knocked off Oklahoma 41-13 and Vanderbilt 38-14, with Gunner Stockton throwing for 295 yards and three touchdowns against the Commodores.

Even so, the underlying metrics are less flattering. Georgia’s net efficiency rank sits at 31st nationally, and its adjusted defense is 67th, the weakest profile of the four teams Herbstreit mentioned. Two weeks into the season, Herbstreit was blunt about the Bulldogs: “We don't know anything about Georgia.”

Alabama has also surged into the mix. The No.

6 Crimson Tide are 5-0 and 3-0 in the SEC, and they’ve scored at least 49 points in each of their last three games. That stretch ended with a 56-23 win at No.

16 Mississippi State, where Keelon Russell threw three touchdown passes and ran for another. After that performance, Paul Finebaum called Alabama college football’s most complete team.

The Crimson Tide’s profile backs up the buzz. They rank second nationally in net efficiency and ninth in adjusted defense.

Now the spotlight turns to Saturday night’s showdown in Tuscaloosa. Georgia visits Alabama at 7:30 p.m.

ET on ABC from Bryant-Denny Stadium. The teams split two meetings last season, with Alabama winning 24-21 in Athens and Georgia taking the SEC Championship Game 28-7.

Marcus Freeman Faces A Risky Notre Dame Call Against Stanford

Leonard Moores concussion and Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asas thumb injury have put Marcus Freeman in a familiar late-season spot, weighing short-term lineup choices against the bigger picture. Notre Dame is heavily favored against Stanford, which makes this one of those games where availability can matter more than necessity, especially with a tougher BYU matchup looming on the schedule.

Freeman does not need to force either player back if the staff feels there is any real downside, and the current thinking points toward caution. The Irish have enough margin to protect both players if needed, but until the final call is made, there is still some uncertainty around how much either one will be asked to do against Stanford. Kenny Minchey Just Entered A Notre Dame QB Debate Again

Kenny Mincheys move to Kentucky has already turned into one of those former-Notre Dame storylines that keeps circling back, especially now that he has opened the season with strong play at quarterback for the Wildcats. His development elsewhere only sharpens the conversation in South Bend, where the Irish are keeping an eye on the future of the position and what might come after CJ Carrs expected path toward the 2027 NFL Draft.

Mincheys name is back in the mix because of a recent eligibility rule change that gives him one more year, and that naturally has people wondering whether a return to Notre Dame could even be on the table. There has been no official decision, but the possibility alone is enough to stir debate around a program that never really stops thinking about its quarterback depth chart, especially when a familiar face is playing well somewhere else. Jadarian Price Just Hit Another Early NFL Setback

Jadarian Prices rookie season in Seattle has already taken a difficult turn. The former Notre Dame running back was placed on injured reserve after a chest injury suffered in Week 2 got worse in practice, and he now has to sit out at least four weeks while the Seahawks work through another setback at a position that tends to demand quick trust from a coaching staff.

Price had already been trying to settle in after a rocky start that included ball-security issues, so the injury only adds another layer of frustration to his opening months in the league. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald spoke about the injury and Prices upbeat approach, but for now the bigger question is how long it will take the rookie to get healthy enough to give Seattle a real look again.
