UNCs Offense Faces A Big Duke Test At The Worst Time

With Duke's defense struggling, North Carolina's offensive stars aim to shine in a crucial rivalry showdown.

The North Carolina Tar Heels head into Saturday’s matchup with Duke looking for their second conference win, and the stage feels bigger than a regular-season meeting. The rivalry always sharpens the edges, but the result could matter just as much for where both teams go next.

UNC is coming off a hard-fought win over Pittsburgh, while Duke is trying to bounce back from a shocking loss to Georgia Tech. With that backdrop, here’s how the Tar Heels’ key offensive names could line up in Week 7.

For quarterback Edwards Jr., this feels like the kind of game where he can settle things down. He has thrown two interceptions in each of the last two games, so the turnover issue is impossible to ignore. Even so, Duke’s defense has only one interception all season and has had trouble getting after opposing quarterbacks, which gives the veteran signal caller a real chance to regain control.

That doesn’t mean clean sailing. At minimum, one interception has to be built into the projection for Edwards Jr.

Still, if he’s going to put together a steady four-quarter performance, Saturday looks like the best opportunity. Duke’s defense does not present a daunting test, and UNC has the protection and playmakers to take advantage of a pass rush and secondary that have been underwhelming.

Running back Hall is another player who looks ready for a bounce-back showing. His last two games have been rough, but that comes with some context: Pittsburgh and Notre Dame are both elite run defenses, and Edwards Jr.’s struggles made it harder for the offense to get the ground game going.

Hall has totaled 61 yards on 22 carries over the past two contests, and the expectation here is for a much bigger outing against Duke. If he can’t produce this time, the concern level rises quickly.

Then there’s Shipp, who has been the most explosive Tar Heel of the bunch over the last two games. He has hauled in 13 passes for 202 yards in that stretch, even if the touchdown column is still empty. That lack of scores says more about Edwards Jr. than it does about Shipp, since the quarterback has missed him on several chances.

Against Duke, Shipp is set up to keep rolling. He should post big numbers, and this is a strong spot for him to finally find the end zone for the first time this season. At 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, he works all over the field, and that versatility should show up Saturday.

Duke Just Gave UNC A Huge Rivalry Week Problem

Dukes rivalry-week injury report has introduced another layer of uncertainty into a matchup that already carries plenty of tension for North Carolina. Running back Nate Sheppard is listed as a game-time decision, and his status matters because he has been Dukes most productive runner and one of the most important pieces of the Blue Devils offense.

If Sheppard cannot go, Duke would likely turn to CJ Campbell Jr., a less proven option with far less production and experience. For UNC, the difference between facing Duke with its lead back available or with a backup thrust into a bigger role could shape how the Tar Heels prepare for one of the seasons most closely watched games. Tar Heels Just Sent A Message Before Duke Showdown

North Carolina mens soccer kept rolling with a 1-0 road win over No. 7 Pittsburgh, a result that added another quality line to an already strong stretch. Max Fisher delivered the decisive goal in the 51st minute, finishing a pass from Bertil Rygaard Hansen and giving the Tar Heels the kind of road result that can sharpen a teams edge this time of year.

The victory stretched UNCs winning streak to five games and snapped Pittsburghs six-match unbeaten run, a nice reminder that the Tar Heels are carrying real momentum into the biggest matchups ahead. With Duke next on the horizon, the timing of this performance matters almost as much as the result itself, since wins like this tend to travel well when the pressure rises. [Read more 🡒]

UNC Gets Another Shot To End Duke Rivalry Frustration

North Carolina gets another crack at a rivalry that has been stubbornly frustrating lately when the Tar Heels meet Duke on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET in an ACC football matchup. The game will be carried on ESPN2 and SiriusXM radio, and it comes with some momentum after UNC recently upset a ranked opponent.

The bigger backdrop is simple: the Victory Bell has been out of reach in recent meetings, with Duke finding ways to win close games and leave Carolina looking for answers. Saturday offers the Tar Heels a chance to flip that script, and the broader schedule picture is already taking shape with UNCs 2026 football slate also in view. [Read more 🡒]
