Jarin Stevenson already showed UNC what he can do in spurts. The real test now is whether that version of him shows up every night.
That’s a bigger deal than it might look on paper. With a new coaching staff and a roster that has been turned over, North Carolina needs players who can steady things while everyone sorts out roles. Stevenson has the chance to be one of those anchors, not just because of what he knows, but because of what he can provide on the floor when he’s right.
He arrived in Chapel Hill after two seasons at Alabama, and in his first year back home he averaged 8.1 points and 4.4 rebounds. The finish was better, too.
Over the final 10 games, he put up 10.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest. That late surge is the clearest proof that the upside is real.
Stevenson’s value comes from how many different ways he can affect a game. He can work around the basket, but he can also stretch beyond the arc, and that combination matters.
When defenders have to honor his jumper, the floor opens up for everyone else. Driving lanes get cleaner.
Possessions get easier. And when he adds movement and rebounding to that threat, he can impact the game without needing a set called for him every trip.
His background matters, too. Stevenson already has experience in major-conference basketball and postseason competition, which gives UNC a frontcourt piece who has been through higher-level battles before.
The question is whether that influence holds when the shot isn’t dropping. That’s where the season will be defined for him.
A strong stretch is one thing; a dependable year is another. UNC needs him locked in on the smaller details even on off nights - boxing out, finishing defensive possessions, and staying active on offense.
That’s what a successful season would look like for Stevenson: building on the way he closed last season and becoming a reliable presence up front. More rebounding.
More purposeful involvement. More proof that Michael Malone can count on him in different kinds of games.
Stevenson has already shown enough to make the next step feel real. The challenge now is turning those flashes into his baseline. For UNC, that kind of consistency could end up meaning a lot.

Miami Faces A Trap-Game Test Fans Can't Ignore
North Carolina is back in the kind of game that can tell you a lot about where it stands in the ACC race, even if the conversation around Week 9 has centered more on Miamis looming test than the Tar Heels themselves. The matchup figures to draw attention because it puts North Carolina in the middle of a prediction market that expects a close game, and those kinds of games usually say plenty about a teams steadiness, its ability to handle pressure and whether it can make an opponent uncomfortable for four quarters.
For the Tar Heels, the bigger storyline is less about the outside noise and more about whether they can turn a difficult spot into a statement opportunity. Miami is being picked to escape with a narrow win, which leaves North Carolina with a chance to challenge that expectation and change the tone around its season, even if the projection still tilts toward the Hurricanes. The setup is simple enough, but these are exactly the sorts of games where the details matter and one timely swing can change how the rest of the week gets discussed. [Read more 🡒]
