UNCs GM Search Just Revealed How Belichick Wants To Build This Roster

As UNC embarks on a football program overhaul, they've enlisted expert help to ensure strategic roster management and revitalized team dynamics.

North Carolina’s search for a football general manager is about more than filling one job. The outside firm the Tar Heels hired could end up touching just about every corner of the program, from roster decisions and contract talks to fundraising and day-to-day football operations.

ZRG Turnkey Search was brought in early October to lead the replacement search for Michael Lombardi and provide consulting help. According to its contract with UNC, obtained by WRAL through a public records request, the firm will be paid $100,000 plus expenses. That breaks down to $60,000 for consulting services and $40,000 for the general manager search.

Former Michigan general manager Sean Magee, Turnkey’s vice president of GM Solutions, is the consultant on the assignment through Dec. 14.

UNC announced the hires of Turnkey and Magee on Oct. 6.

The role the firm may play goes well beyond a traditional search. The agreement calls for participation in prospect meetings, retention strategy discussions and other roster-building work. It also includes strategic advisory and operational support for the head coach across front office functions, with an eye toward lining up roster decisions with the program’s broader goals.

That lines up with the kind of system Lombardi said he was trying to build before resigning in September amid an internal investigation into the football program. Lombardi was the highest-paid general manager in college football at $1.5 million annually, and he had described a more standardized approach to identifying and valuing players.

“If you’re a starter on the team, there’s going to be a certain value in place on what level of a starter you are,” Lombardi said in February 2025, just months after Belichick and he were hired. “That’s why you have to have a grading system.

You can’t just arbitrarily say, ‘I like this guy, I like that guy.’ We’re not picking fruit here.”

Lombardi also said the lack of a system would create “anarchy” and explained that players would be graded every day.

Turnkey’s contract says the firm can also provide an evaluation and audit of current front office systems, structures, operations, roster construction efforts, fundraising strategies and roster retention initiatives. Its services extend to transfer portal strategy, offseason roster construction, front office staff development and operational best practices.

Belichick said Monday that roster talks are already active.

“There’s a lot of player negotiationing going on now, absolutely, with both the incoming freshmen and with players that are for retention for the ‘27 season,” UNC coach Bill Belichick said Monday.

The consulting scope also reaches into fundraising, which has become part of the roster equation. UNC allocated $13 million to revenue sharing with football players during the 2025 season, but the contract lays out targeted revenue generation support through donor outreach and development programs, along with coordinated funding efforts across the athletic department, affiliated collectives and corporate partners.

The backdrop to all of this is UNC’s internal investigation, which examined allegations of improper workplace relationships, including sex among those in the program. Investigator Nate Huff said the questions also went to the culture inside the building.

“Another example or another question that’s raised is the work environment within the football program,” investigator Nate Huff said at the conclusion of the probe. “Is it a safe and respectful environment?

Do the young people who work there have good supervision and mentorship and all of that? The questions you’re asking get to that, too, which might be more important than who’s sleeping with who.”

Belichick Brings Another Off-Field Distraction To North Carolina

The pair has still been seen together publicly this year, which has only kept the spotlight on a relationship that drew notice in the first place because of their age difference. For the Tar Heels, it is another reminder that Belichicks presence is going to come with plenty of scrutiny beyond the football field. [Read more 🡒]

Philip Rivers Could Change The Carolina Rivalry In A Way Fans Hate

Philip Rivers has surfaced in the kind of rumor that instantly grabs attention across the Triangle, because the former NC State quarterback is now being linked to the Wolfpacks opening after Dave Doerens firing. Rivers is currently coaching at a high school in Alabama, and he has already acknowledged the chatter while making clear there is nothing concrete yet, but even the possibility is enough to stir up old memories and fresh debate.

For North Carolina fans, the idea carries an extra edge because Rivers is not just a former Wolfpack star, he is one of the most recognizable figures ever tied to the rivalry. The discussion has also brought up his connections to former teammates and what a hire like this could mean for NC States direction, but for now it remains exactly that, a conversation without an official decision. UNC Still Has One Big Roster Concern Before No. 1 Miami

North Carolinas Friday night availability report brought a little clarity ahead of its matchup with No. 1 Miami, and a little more uncertainty too. Five Tar Heels are still ruled out, while four others are listed as questionable, leaving the staff to sort through a roster picture that is still very much in flux as kickoff approaches.

There was one bit of good news for the Tar Heels, with defensive lineman Zavion Griffin-Haynes now considered available. Miami will also be short-handed, with six players out for the game, but the biggest update for UNC may still be coming later, when the final availability report is released two hours before kickoff.
