Clemson’s quarterback picture took another hit Saturday night, and now a true freshman looks set to walk into the ACC opener and make his first career start.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Christopher Vizzina is week-to-week after injuring his elbow in Clemson’s 22-7 home win over Georgia Southern. With Vizzina sidelined, Tait Reynolds is expected to start when North Carolina visits Clemson on Saturday at noon in a game on ESPN.
Vizzina had won the starting job over Reynolds in camp, but his night against Georgia Southern ended after only three offensive series. He went 4 of 7 for 19 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, and hit T.J.
Moore for a 10-yard score that put Clemson ahead 7-0. The injury came on a hit that left his left arm numb, and even though he wanted to go back in, he never got the chance.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said the Tigers had planned to give Reynolds the fourth offensive series anyway, but the numbness changed everything once it was time to consider putting Vizzina back on the field.
“We wanted to get him back in there, but his left arm was basically numb,” Swinney said.
That handed the offense to Reynolds, a three-star recruit from Queen Creek, Ariz., who also signed with Clemson to play baseball. He finished 16 of 27 for 178 yards and added 38 rushing yards.
His first series went sideways when he lost a fumble at the Georgia Southern 10, but he settled in enough to lead five scoring drives. All five ended with Nolan Hauser field goals.
Georgia Southern had former UNC quarterback Max Johnson under center, and he went 27 of 47 for 244 yards and one touchdown, including a 42-yard pass.
Swinney came away encouraged by what he saw from Reynolds, though he also pointed to the mistakes that still need cleaning up.
“I thought Tait showed a lot of promise tonight. He did a lot of good stuff,” Swinney said. “I wish he had not made some of the mistakes he did, but he’ll learn from it.”
Reynolds also saw action in Clemson’s season-opening 51-10 loss at LSU on Sept. 5, when he went 4 of 6 for 22 yards.
He enrolled early in January and spent the spring and summer pushing Vizzina before narrowly missing out on the job in camp. Vizzina’s recovery timeline remains uncertain, and Swinney didn’t offer much clarity after the Georgia Southern game.
“We’ll see. Hopefully it’s nothing bad,” he said, before adding, “We will need both of those guys, but Tait showed some promise.”
For now, the Tigers appear ready to hand the keys to Reynolds.

UNC May Have A New Passing Weapon Before Clemson
UNC has spent the first two weeks grinding through ugly weather and finding out a lot about itself in the process. The Tar Heels have won both games in rain-soaked conditions, given up only 13 points across eight quarters and shown a defense that has looked sharper on third downs, while the offense has had to make the most of limited possessions and has still managed to stay efficient.
One of the quieter developments has been the emergence of freshman CJ Sadler in the passing game. He has already started to carve out a real role, sharing targets with the rest of the receiver group and giving the Tar Heels another option to feature as the schedule stiffens. With Clemson next, UNC may be looking at a new kind of threat to keep defenses honest, even if the full extent of that role is still unfolding. [Read more 🡒]
UNC Just Got An Opening It Cannot Waste Against Clemson
Clemsons offense is headed into its next meeting with North Carolina with a different face under center, after starting quarterback Christopher Vizzina suffered an elbow injury and is expected to miss the game. Freshman Tait Reynolds is projected to make the start in his place, giving the Tar Heels a chance to line up against a much less familiar look than the one Clemson had planned to feature.
For UNC, the timing matters because Clemson has already spent much of the early season looking out of sync, and a quarterback switch only adds to the uncertainty. The Tar Heels do not need to solve every issue for the Tigers to gain an edge here, but they do need to treat this as an opportunity to pressure a young passer and make Clemson play from behind the curve. Jaylen Harvey Just Gave UNC A Defensive Answer It Needed
When North Carolina went into its game against an FCS opponent without Melkart Abou-Jaoude because of a hand injury, the focus naturally shifted to who could help steady the pass rush. Jaylen Harvey answered with a disruptive showing, putting consistent pressure on the quarterback and finishing with multiple sacks, while Xavier Lewis added two sacks of his own to give the defense a much-needed edge up front.
The Tar Heels also got efficient work on the other side of the ball, with Demon June scoring three times in the red zone and Jelani Thurman hauling in four catches for 71 yards. But the more immediate takeaway for UNC was defensive depth, and Harvey's performance offered a timely reminder that the rotation has at least one more player capable of making life uncomfortable for opposing quarterbacks when the injuries start piling up.
