Carolina women’s tennis wrapped up its weekend at the ITA Hall of Fame Classic in Williamsburg, Va., and the Tar Heels left with plenty to show for it: six singles wins and three doubles wins across the event.
UNC brought four players to the six-team tournament - Alana Boyce, Alanis Hamilton, Aya Manning and Avery Nguyen - and Hamilton was the steadiest Tar Heel of the group. The junior went unbeaten in both singles and doubles, opening with a straight-set singles win over William & Mary’s Francesca Davis and later teaming with Manning for a 6-4 doubles victory over Davis and her partner. On Sunday, Hamilton followed that up by edging Liberty’s Diania Ilie in singles before picking up another 6-4 doubles win.
Nguyen matched that singles success with two straight-set victories of her own. The freshman handled William & Mary’s Nicole Lukesova on Saturday and then beat Liberty’s Milana Tsulygina on Sunday. In doubles, Nguyen partnered with Boyce and the pair finished 1-1 on the weekend.
Manning’s weekend was a bounce-back story. After dropping a tight three-setter in singles on the first day, she responded with a win over Liberty’s Celina Joseph on Sunday. She also went 2-0 in doubles alongside Hamilton.
Boyce split her weekend, finishing 1-1 in both singles and doubles. She opened with a strong singles showing and a doubles win against William & Mary before later falling to Liberty’s Yee Ching Wai in a three-set match.
Saturday set the tone for UNC’s run. Hamilton and Manning beat William & Mary’s Davis and Larsson, 6-4, in doubles, while Boyce and Nguyen took down Kernagis and Gonzalez Galino by the same score.
In singles, Nguyen beat Lukesova, 6-4, 6-2; Hamilton rolled past Davis, 6-2, 6-0; and Boyce topped Larsson, 6-0, 6-4. Manning’s day ended in a three-set loss to Rebeka Svabikova, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (4).
Sunday brought another doubles win for Hamilton and Manning, this time against Liberty’s Wai and Tsulygina, 6-4. Boyce and Nguyen fell to Liberty’s Martinez and Ilie, 6-2. In singles, Hamilton outlasted Ilie, 6-7 (3), 6-1, 1-0 (1), Manning beat Joseph, 6-4, 6-3, Boyce lost to Wai, 6-4, 6-7 (1), 1-0 (7), and Nguyen beat Tsulygina, 6-1, 6-3.
The event included William & Mary, USC, Princeton, Liberty and UNCW, and was contested in a hidden dual format. Carolina opened the weekend against William & Mary and closed it out against Liberty.

UNC Got The Ranked Win But Left Fans With A Bigger Concern
North Carolina went on the road and came away with its first ranked win under Bill Belichick, a result that should matter in a season still trying to establish a clear identity. The Tar Heels needed both sides of the ball to settle in after a sloppy start, but they did enough in the second half to take advantage of a Pitt team that kept helping them with poor decisions late.
Even with the victory in hand, the performance left plenty to sort through. UNC had turnovers, the game never felt clean for long, and the kind of sharp, steady execution that usually travels in November was only there in stretches, which is exactly why the mood around this one was a little more complicated than the final score suggested. North Carolina Kept Its Season Alive With A Win Fans Will Debate
North Carolina needed a win that could steady a season that has spent too much time on the edge, and Saturdays 21-17 result over No. 25 Pittsburgh did exactly that. The Tar Heels got the kind of lift they have been chasing, with the defense setting the tone and making life hard for Pitt after halftime, while Billy Edwards delivered a performance that had its rough patches but still mattered in the final accounting. Jordan Shipp and Jelani Thurman gave the passing game useful answers, and tight end Shamar Easter stepped into a larger role and found ways to help after injuries thinned the options around him.
The debate now is less about the result than how North Carolina got there, because this was not a clean, controlled win so much as a survival job with plenty of lumps along the way. Even so, the fourth-down stops in the second half and the timely contributions from a handful of receivers gave the Tar Heels something tangible to carry forward as bowl hopes stay alive. For a team trying to build some late-season momentum, the next few days will say a lot about whether this was the kind of win that changes a stretch run or just another close one in a year full of them. UNC Just Sent A Loud ACC Message Before Its Next Test
North Carolinas mens soccer team kept rolling at Dorrance Field with a lopsided ACC win over Notre Dame, a result that carried real weight beyond the scoreline. The Tar Heels put together a complete attacking performance and showed again why they can be a problem for league opponents when they get into a rhythm.
Joschi Schelb led the way with a hat trick and an assist, while Ryan Zellefrow was just as dangerous with two goals and three assists in the rout. It was UNCs fourth straight victory, pushing the Tar Heels to 6-2-3 and giving them some momentum heading into their next test. [Read more 🡒]
