UNC’s tight end room has gone from a preseason bright spot to one of the driving forces behind the offense.
That was the bet heading into the year: a group with limited proven production, but plenty of upside and enough talent to hint at NFL potential down the road. Jelani Thurman was the name singled out as the likely “biggest surprise on the season,” and through six games that prediction looks pretty sharp.
Thurman has become one of Billy Edwards Jr.’s most reliable weapons, especially near the goal line. He has 26 catches for 314 yards and four touchdowns, and those numbers already blow past what he managed across his previous three seasons combined.
For perspective, UNC tight ends as a whole had just 29 catches and two touchdowns all of last season. Thurman now ranks 10th nationally among tight ends in receiving yards and 11th in receptions, and only two tight ends have scored more touchdowns.
With plenty of season still ahead, he looks like the kind of player who could draw serious interest if he chooses to move on after this year.
Shamar Easter hasn’t put up Thurman-level numbers, but he has been plenty important in his own way. He is third on the team in receiving yards and has added two touchdowns.
He also delivered one of the biggest plays of the season, hauling in a 75-yard touchdown against Pitt early in the fourth quarter that stood up as the game-winner. It is not every day a tight end beats a defensive back in a sprint, but Easter did exactly that when he outran Pittsburgh’s Cruce Brookins for the final 50 yards.
Together, Thurman and Easter have given UNC a huge lift in the passing game. They’ve combined for six of the team’s nine receiving touchdowns and account for more than a third of the Heels’ receiving yards.
Thurman’s presence has also made things easier for Edwards. Even though Edwards’ completion percentage is down from his one full season starting at Maryland, his yards per attempt is better than his career average.
And the room still hasn’t been at full strength. Jaxxon Warren is out for the season after an injury in training camp, while Jordan Washington just returned from injury and made his season debut against Duke. Both were viewed as potential contributors before getting hurt.
With bowl eligibility in view, UNC needs this position group to keep carrying its share. Outside of Jordan Shipp, no receiver has clearly emerged as a dependable go-to option. Washington’s return could give Edwards another target, but for now the tight ends are doing the heavy lifting - and doing it well.

UNC May Need To Survive Syracuse Shorthanded Again
North Carolina heads into its matchup with Syracuse carrying another familiar injury report, and this one could leave the Tar Heels thin in a few key spots. Six starters are listed as questionable, including wide receiver Jordan Shipp and running back Benjamin Hall, while defensive back Tre Miller has already been ruled out.
The larger concern is the overall depth chart, with eight Tar Heels already out for the game before kickoff even arrives. Syracuse has its own availability issues with five players ruled out, but UNCs challenge is more about absorbing the losses and finding enough healthy bodies to stay balanced on both sides of the ball. UNC Just Entered A Recruiting Battle Tar Heel Fans Will Watch Closely
Grant Duggins has officially landed a scholarship offer from North Carolina, adding another major local name to the Tar Heels recruiting board. The five-star prospect from Greensboro received the offer during an in-state visit from Coach Michael Malone and his staff, a move that underscores how seriously UNC is treating the early chase for one of the countrys premier young players.
Duggins is already rated as the No. 8 prospect nationally in the Class of 2029 and the top player in North Carolina, which makes this the kind of recruiting battle that will be watched closely around Chapel Hill. For the Tar Heels, keeping a high-profile in-state target in the pipeline is always important, and this one has the feel of an early test of how much traction UNC can build before the competition really heats up.
