North Carolina’s trip to Clemson suddenly looks a lot more manageable after the latest quarterback news out of Tiger Town.
The Tar Heels are heading into ACC play at 2-0, and the matchup already carried plenty of attention given the preseason spotlight around UNC. But Clemson’s outlook took a hit over the weekend when starting quarterback Christopher Vizzina suffered an elbow injury against Georgia Southern and is now considered week-to-week, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He is expected to miss Saturday’s game against North Carolina, which pushes freshman Tait Reynolds into the starting job.
Vizzina left after attempting seven passes. He completed four for 19 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.
That puts Reynolds in line for his first career start, even though he already handled most of Clemson’s Week 2 win over Georgia Southern. In that game, he went 16-of-27 for 178 yards. It was enough to get the Tigers through the night, but not enough to inspire much confidence heading into a conference opener against a defense that has shown real teeth.
North Carolina’s defense has been one of the early bright spots, helped by several new additions and a front that has stood out through the first two games. Melkart Abou Jaoude, Xavier Lewis, and Jaylen Harvey have been the names doing the damage up front. Abou Jaoude’s status is still worth watching after he injured his hand in Week 0 against TCU and sat out this past weekend against East Tennessee State.
That absence may have been purely precautionary, since UNC didn’t need to push him against an overmatched opponent. If he’s back on Saturday, the Tar Heels could have the kind of pass rush that makes life miserable for a freshman quarterback.
With Bill Belichick overseeing the defense, North Carolina should have plenty of ways to stress Reynolds with disguised pressure and exotic blitz looks. Even if Vizzina were healthy, the Tar Heels would have a shot. With Clemson turning to a true freshman who looked average at best against Georgia Southern, UNC suddenly has a real argument to be the favorite.
That’s a big shift for a team that already looks steady on both sides of the ball. Billy Edwards Jr. has given North Carolina solid quarterback play, Bobby Petrino’s offense has looked improved, and the defense has matched the momentum. A 3-0 start is now very much in play for the Tar Heels, and that would be a strong early return for Belichick.
