UNC Stuns Fans as Late Rally Falls Short in ACC Tournament

Despite a valiant late surge, UNC's early struggles and crucial turnovers sealed their fate in an early ACC Tournament exit.

The Tar Heels’ ACC Tournament journey was cut short after a sluggish performance against Clemson. UNC found themselves trailing by eight at halftime, unable to shake off a lackluster first half. Despite a spirited rally in the closing minutes, Clemson's composure at the free-throw line sealed Carolina's fate.

Henri Veesaar was a standout for UNC, posting an impressive 28 points and 17 rebounds. His efforts were pivotal in the late-game push, but his six turnovers were costly, especially when considering the team only had ten in total.

Derek Dixon's late-game heroics from beyond the arc added 16 points, while Jarin Stevenson chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds. Seth Trimble contributed 13 points and dished out eight assists.

However, the Tar Heels’ bench was nearly silent, adding just five points compared to Clemson’s 29.

The final minutes showcased UNC’s potential, with their defensive intensity causing real trouble for Clemson. Yet, Dillon Hunter's clutch free throws for the Tigers ensured there would be no comeback.

Carolina’s struggles from the charity stripe continued, shooting just 59%. In a game this tight, those missed opportunities loomed large.

The frustration lies in the missing intensity from earlier in the game. The late defensive adjustments came just a bit too late. While the team’s sudden surge in three-point shooting was unexpected, avoiding an early deficit could have made all the difference.

A victory would have set up a thrilling semifinal against Duke, but instead, UNC now awaits their fate on Selection Sunday.
