When it comes to transfer portal gems, UNC hit the jackpot with Henri Veesaar's arrival in Chapel Hill. Hailing from Tallinn, Estonia, Veesaar stepped in to fill a crucial gap for the Tar Heels, and he did so with flair. His standout junior season has earned him a spot as a finalist for college basketball's most prestigious award for centers.
Henri Veesaar Named Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award Finalist
Veesaar is in elite company as one of five finalists for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, which honors the top center in college basketball. He's the only ACC player to make the cut, joining Alex Condon (Florida), Graham Ike (Gonzaga), Flory Bidunga (Kansas), and Zuby Ejiofor (St. John's) in the race for the honor.
A Breakout Year for Veesaar
Veesaar's journey began at Arizona, where he started just five games over two seasons. Initially a reserve, he saw his role expand from freshman to sophomore year. Seeking a bigger opportunity, Veesaar entered the transfer portal, and UNC's Hubert Davis was ready to offer him a prominent role.
With the Tar Heels needing size in the frontcourt, Veesaar became a pivotal part of their roster overhaul. While expectations were high, few anticipated just how impactful he would be.
Over 29 games, the 7-footer nearly averaged a double-double, posting 16.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. His shooting was lights out, hitting 61.4% from the field and an impressive 41.5% from three-point range.
Before this season, Veesaar had never recorded a double-double. He shattered that ceiling with 13 such performances, underscoring his productivity and importance to the Tar Heels.
A Well-Deserved Recognition
Veesaar has not only positioned himself among the best centers in college basketball, but he's also seen his NBA Draft stock soar. While he still has a year of eligibility left, his achievements this season have been nothing short of remarkable, making him one of the top transfer portal acquisitions in the nation.
