UNC Still Has One Big Roster Concern Before No. 1 Miami

Deck: As North Carolina prepares to face the top-ranked Miami team, UNC's latest availability report holds steady with no unexpected changes to their lineup.

The ACC’s Friday night availability report didn’t shake up the picture much for North Carolina heading into its Halloween matchup with No. 1 Miami, and for the Tar Heels, that’s about as steady as they could hope for at this stage.

UNC will again be without defensive back Tre Miller, defensive linemen Viliami Moala, Vodney Cleveland and Jimmy-Phrisco Alo-Suliafu, plus wide receiver Keeyun Chapman. All five had already been ruled out earlier in the week, and nothing changed in the latest update.

Miller’s absence remains a notable hit to the secondary. He has not played since UNC’s game against Pittsburgh earlier this month, leaving the Tar Heels short another body in a defense that is already dealing with several missing pieces.

There is still some uncertainty on four names. Defensive back Peyton Waters, linebacker Jonathan Agumadu, and offensive linemen Jordan Hall and Andrew Threatt are all listed as questionable.

Waters is the biggest one to watch given the opponent. North Carolina’s defense is staring down the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, and another experienced defensive back would be a welcome addition against a Miami offense that can strike quickly.

Up front, the Tar Heels are also waiting on the offensive line situation to settle. Hall returned against Syracuse after missing time, while Threatt logged 30 snaps in UNC’s loss to the Orange. Getting both on the field would give North Carolina more stability against a Miami defensive front that brings plenty of talent.

There was one positive note from the earlier report: defensive lineman Zavion Griffin-Haynes, who had previously been listed as questionable, no longer appears on Friday’s report. Under the ACC’s system, players not listed are considered available, so that gives UNC another option on a defense already missing several contributors.

Miami’s report included six unavailable players: wide receiver Joshua Moore, running back CharMar Brown, defensive backs Ja'Boree Antoine and Romanas "OJ" Frederique Jr., offensive lineman Max Buchanan and tight end Luka Gilbert.

So while Friday night didn’t bring any late drama, the final answer for UNC still hinges on those four questionable players. The ACC will issue one more availability report two hours before kickoff, which should settle the Tar Heels’ lineup before they take their shot at the nation’s No. 1 team.

The pair has still been seen together publicly this year, which has only kept the spotlight on a relationship that drew notice in the first place because of their age difference. Philip Rivers Could Change The Carolina Rivalry In A Way Fans Hate

Philip Rivers has surfaced in the kind of rumor that instantly grabs attention across the Triangle, because the former NC State quarterback is now being linked to the Wolfpacks opening after Dave Doerens firing. Rivers is currently coaching at a high school in Alabama, and he has already acknowledged the chatter while making clear there is nothing concrete yet, but even the possibility is enough to stir up old memories and fresh debate.

For North Carolina fans, the idea carries an extra edge because Rivers is not just a former Wolfpack star, he is one of the most recognizable figures ever tied to the rivalry. The discussion has also brought up his connections to former teammates and what a hire like this could mean for NC States direction, but for now it remains exactly that, a conversation without an official decision. UNC Went Toe To Toe With No. 1 Miami Until One Brutal Mistake

North Carolina went into Week 9 and gave No. 1 Miami everything it could handle, trading punches after the Hurricanes struck first and answering with a string of touchdown drives led by Billy Edwards Jr. The Tar Heels also got the kind of defensive stops that kept the game within reach, and for a while it looked like they had the top-ranked team on the ropes despite the noise around a few controversial penalties.

UNC even briefly grabbed the lead in the fourth quarter, turning a tense showdown into a real upset threat. Then came the play that changed everything: Edwards Jr. put the ball on the ground late, Miami recovered, and a night that had been full of belief and resistance suddenly tilted back toward the favorite.
