North Carolina’s internal investigation into its football program came with a hefty bill: nearly $1 million.
That figure, reported by WRAL’s Brian Murphy, is the latest detail to emerge from a fall inquiry that pulled Steve Belichick and Michael Lombardi into the center of the storm. The probe, first reported by WRAL, uncovered troubling allegations tied to the program, including claims of improper sexual relationships and drug use inside football facilities.
The findings led to both men stepping away from their roles. Lombardi and Belichick were key figures in the investigation, and each submitted resignation letters after the results became public.
The report said that “certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct.” At the same time, the probe did not determine that the issues were systemic.
Lombardi exited the program on Sept. 3, just hours after North Carolina opened its season. Before that, he had been on paid administrative leave since late July after becoming the subject of a human resources complaint filed by a former UNC front office employee, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Steve Belichick announced his plan to resign two weeks later, though his formal resignation did not come until Oct. 27. He had previously been on medical leave.
All of it has unfolded during a strange season for Bill Belichick’s second year at North Carolina. On the field, the Tar Heels are on the verge of bowl eligibility after last year’s 4-8 finish. Off it, the program has been dealing with a messy investigation and the loss of two of Belichick’s closest confidants.

UNC Football Probe Just Raised Bigger Questions Around Bill Belichick
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has spent more than $914,000 on an internal investigation into its football program, a costly review that ended with the resignations of general manager Michael Lombardi and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick. Conducted by three law firms, the probe found isolated actions that did not reflect the universitys values, but it stopped short of concluding there was a broader breakdown inside the program.
For UNC, the bigger issue now is how much of this episode lands at the feet of Bill Belichick and how quickly the program can move past it. Chancellor Lee Roberts has continued to back the head coach, but the investigation has only sharpened the scrutiny around the structure of his staff and the culture taking shape around the Tar Heels. UNC Is Chasing A 5-Star Guard With Huge Class Implications
North Carolina has already landed one major piece for its future backcourt with a commitment from five-star recruit Demarcus Henry in the class of 2027, and now the Tar Heels are keeping close tabs on another elite guard who could reshape that same cycle. Brady Pettigrew, a five-star combo guard in the class of 2028, has emerged as a name to watch after visiting Chapel Hill, giving UNC a chance to stay in the mix with one of the most coveted young guards in the country.
The wrinkle is Pettigrews timeline, since a possible reclassification to 2027 would instantly put him on the same board as Henry and give North Carolina a chance to stack elite talent in one class. Multiple top programs are chasing Pettigrew, so the Tar Heels are not alone in this pursuit, but the combination of his recent visit and the possibility of an accelerated path makes this one worth monitoring closely for what it could mean for UNCs long-term roster build. Touted UNC Freshman Suddenly Out Of Team Activities After Serious Crash
North Carolina freshman defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland Jr. has been away from team activities since a single-car crash in Chatham County on Sept. 17, a development that adds another layer of uncertainty to a player who has not yet appeared this season. Court records show Cleveland was cited for speeding, unsafe passing and failure to maintain lane control, and he was found responsible for those charges.
For the Tar Heels, the situation leaves one of their young defensive linemen on the sideline and unavailable on ACC availability reports while the program waits for the matter to play out. Cleveland had been a touted addition to the roster, but for now his focus is clearly away from football, and there is no indication he is back in the teams daily routine. [Read more 🡒]
