No. 15 North Carolina will put its seven-match unbeaten run on the line Friday night when it hosts NC State at Dorrance Field at Play2Dream Legacy Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Chapel Hill, and the Tar Heels are trying to keep their stretch rolling against a Wolfpack side that has gone 2-1-2 over its last five matches. Carolina is also marking Senior Night, with Evans Dapaah, Max Fisher, Nick Lockermann, Luca Nikolai and Joschi Schelb - along with student manager Xander Luzniak - set to be recognized before the match. It will also be a Carolina Fever game, with all students receiving two fever points and the first 500 students getting a Carolina hard hat.
For those not making the trip, the match will air on ACC Network.
This will be the 95th meeting in the series, with UNC holding a 57-22-15 edge over the Wolfpack.
Schelb has been the headline-maker for the Tar Heels all season and enters the rivalry match with 15 goals and two assists in 14 matches. A Hermann Trophy Midseason Watch List selection, he has recorded hat tricks in each of Carolina’s last two home games and has found the net in seven of the last nine matches overall.
His 15 goals rank second nationally, just two off Washington’s Zach Ramsey, and his 32 points also stand second in the country. That goal total is the highest by a Tar Heel in a single season since Andy Craven scored 15 in 2014.
Nikolai has also been a major part of the attack after choosing to return to Carolina following his draft by NYCFC. He has posted four goals and nine assists this season, and his nine assists are tied for the league lead and rank fifth nationally.
Ryan Zellefrow has given UNC another dangerous layer in the midfield, contributing four goals and six assists for 14 points, which is third on the team.
Another Tar Heel has added speed and production on the flank, turning pace into a goal and seven assists this season.
On the defensive end, Alan Rutkowski and the Carolina back line have delivered five clean sheets this year, including two in the last three matches.

UNC Freshman Nyqir Helton May Be Forcing His Way Onto The Field
Nyqir Heltons first career start for North Carolina came against Syracuse, and it was earned the old-fashioned way. The true freshman wide receiver got the nod because of what he had shown in practice, not because of an opening created by someone else, a sign that the Tar Heels are beginning to trust him as more than just a long-term project.
Helton has been building toward this moment through steady work in practice, scout team reps and the programs developmental Sunday Night Football sessions, and the payoff was a career-high 67 snaps. For a young receiver trying to carve out a role, that kind of usage says plenty about where he stands right now, even if his path to a permanent spot is still unfolding. [Read more 🡒]
Tar Heels Have One More Home Test With ACC Stakes Rising
No. 2 Carolinas womens soccer team gets one last chance to protect its home ground when SMU comes to town for the final regular-season game in Chapel Hill. Bella Devey has been the main finishing threat, leading the team with 16 goals, while Peyton Trayer has anchored things in net with 10 wins. With senior-day type emotions and league positioning both in play, this one offers Carolina a chance to close out its home schedule on a strong note before the bigger tests ahead. [Read more 🡒]
UNC Heads Into No. 1 Miami With A Pressure Point Fans Feel
North Carolina heads into a matchup with No. 1 Miami carrying more than just the usual road-game pressure. The Tar Heels have spent the week trying to steady an offense that has leaned heavily on Drake Edwards Jr., even as his recent struggles have helped fuel losses and put a spotlight on his role moving forward. For a team trying to keep pace in the ACC race, this is the kind of game where every possession feels magnified.
Miami brings the sort of attack that can expose any hesitation, with Darian Mensah directing the offense and Toney giving the Hurricanes another dangerous target on the outside. North Carolinas defense has already shown some cracks against the run and in the secondary, which makes the challenge even steeper as the Tar Heels try to avoid getting stretched on both sides of the ball. However this one unfolds, it has the feel of a game that could sharpen the conversation around where UNC stands right now and where it goes next. [Read more 🡒]
