North Carolina’s quarterback battle is already starting to tilt, and the early read is hard to miss: Miles O’Neill has forced his way into the conversation.
The Tar Heels are in the middle of a real competition for the Week 1 job, and earlier this week Heel Report’s Andrew Jones offered an update that suggests the race has narrowed to O’Neill and Billy Edwards Jr. That alone is notable.
O’Neill, the Texas A&M transfer, was not supposed to be this close this soon. But he has put himself in position to challenge for the starting role, and that changes the shape of the entire quarterback picture in Chapel Hill.
Edwards Jr., the Wisconsin transfer, brings more experience to the table. He has attempted more passes and has the longer collegiate résumé, but that experience hasn’t exactly translated into excitement.
The source of the intrigue here is O’Neill’s ceiling. He has only thrown 20 passes in two seasons, yet his arm talent stands out, and there’s still room for him to clean up his accuracy on throws underneath.
Coaches and players have also said he can make every throw, and he adds athleticism that could open things up in Bobby Petrino’s offense.
That combination is why O’Neill has become such a serious contender. He may be the riskier option, but he also offers the chance to elevate the offense in a way Edwards Jr. simply does not. The alternative, according to the reporting, would leave North Carolina looking a lot like it did last season.
The bigger issue is timing. This can’t drag into the opening week of the season.
North Carolina already has enough uncertainty around the program, and letting the quarterback decision spill into Week 1 would only make the situation messier. The staff needs to settle it before then.

Melkart Abou Jaoude is back, and the Tar Heels also brought in transfers Jaylen Harvey and Tarvorise Brown, giving the line a better chance to hold up over the course of the season. Around Chapel Hill, that group has quickly become one of the more interesting parts of the roster because it has the potential to steady the entire defense.
Derek McDonald recently pointed to the pass rush as a key to how far this team can go, and thats the part Bill Belichick will be watching closely. If UNC can get consistent pressure with the defensive line, it changes everything behind it and gives the rest of the defense a chance to play more aggressively.
