North Carolina brought in reinforcements this offseason, and one of the more interesting additions on offense comes with built-in familiarity.
The Tar Heels added former Wisconsin quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. and wide receiver Trech Kekahuna as they looked to shore up a unit that struggled last season. Kekahuna, a redshirt junior wideout, talked about Edwards Jr.’s leadership during his press conference on Thursday, giving North Carolina at least one established connection as the offense tries to get back on track.
That relationship matters because the quarterback battle is still unresolved. North Carolina is holding a competition for the Week 1 job, with Edwards Jr. and Miles O’Neill projected as the top two contenders. Edwards Jr. still has to win the role outright, but if he does, the Tar Heels would already have a quarterback-wide receiver link that could help settle things in the passing game.
Even so, Kekahuna is part of a crowded group. Jordan Shipp, Mason Humphrey, and Jaxxon Warren are all projected to sit higher in the pass-catching hierarchy, so the connection with Edwards Jr. is only one piece of the puzzle.
What North Carolina needs most is simple: better offense. Quarterback play will shape how far that improvement goes, and if Edwards Jr. can handle the job at a competent level, he would give the Tar Heels a much better chance to move past what happened last season. Training camp should reveal more soon, and by then the picture for 2026 should start to come into focus.
