North Carolina’s football season has opened with some encouraging signs on the field, but the noise around Bill Belichick and his program hasn’t gone away.
Belichick has tried to keep the focus on football, saying his attention is on making sure his guys are ready and that the outside noise stays outside noise. Even so, the situation around the program still feels bigger than the results in the first two weeks.
A lot of the attention has centered on the decisions Belichick made when assembling his staff, and not all of those moves have worked out. That has fueled speculation that there may be more happening behind the scenes than the public knows.
Jim Rome took that idea even further, suggesting North Carolina could be looking for a way out. “Looking at the tea leaves, it just doesn't look good,” Rome said. “I mean, if I didn't know any better, I would say that it almost looks like the school has those investigators snooping around trying to find a reason to fire your (expletive).”
He continued: “It's almost like somebody leaked what the investigators are investigating to further turn the public against you or look for a way out,” Rome said, H/T PFSN. “Or, I don't know, maybe it's the players.
Maybe it's the players' parents. Maybe nobody's happy to have you there.”
Whether that reading is fair or not, the reality is simple: Belichick was hired to win games. If North Carolina keeps winning, and nothing major is unfolding behind the curtain, he should keep his job.
